Which type of Cork Floors, Glue down or Floating?
Comments (1)I always use glue-down tiles in bathrooms. I have done many, and they are beautiful. Always warm underfoot too. If you (or someone you know/love/live with/clean up after) are the type that tends to leave big puddles on the floor for a couple of days though, you'll probably want to put in ceramics instead (spring for a radiant heating system for your ceramics though- you'll be forever sad that you didn't!). Although floating planks can be easier for the DIYer to install, here are two counts against it in bathrooms: -it is unlikely that the core material (mdf/hdf) is more than simply water-resistant- so a top coat of polyurethane is a must, however.. -the need to leave a perimeter expansion gap for a floating floor precludes the use of caulking to seal the edge against spilled water getting under the floating floor. Absolutely choose a site-finished cork (or add topcoats to a prefinished tile) to seal all seams with varnish. Lastly, caulk the perimeter- especially at the tub. Hope this clears things up. Before you buy, though, check with the manufacturer/supplier that they will approve of your installation. Comments (0)Hi. The big box store had some bamboo flooring on sale, so I bought some for our kitchen and powder room. It's solid bamboo in the "horizontal" form. We thought we might put some 1/4" or 1/2" cork sheets down as an underlayment for both thermal insulation and to make the floor a little more easy on the knees. Has anyone done this? Is cork ok to put under bamboo? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks....See MoreBest Underlayment for engineered wood floating floor
Comments (2)I have not used cork, so I can't speak about that. I have used many other underlayments including FloorMuffler. In my personal experience Sound Solutions underlayment is the best for what you are asking about. One person can't hardly lift and carry a 6ft wide roll of this. Three things you need to have to achieve a quiet and fairly solid feeling floating floor. The substrate has to flat, flat, flat. Use a premium underlayment. Pick a quality floor with excellent milling and a stout joinery system, and the thicker it is the better imo. I have installed this way before and it is very solid feeling underfoot. Most folks are surprised when they discover it's a floating floor....See Morefloating wood floor underlayment
