weeds weeds what and how to kill

These things are invading my yard. How do I rid them now and for the future? Landscapers are putting down preemergent for crabgrass in a few weeks, but this stuff is already showing. Help!

1 and 3 are both Chickweed.

Most likely it is "Poa annua", annual bluegrass, This is a cold weather "weedy" grass that will die out in a few weeks. It is often used as a nurse grass in seed mixes since it does germinate much more quickly than most others. Most often, in established lawns, the seed will germinate and start to grow in late August and most all pre emergent need to be in place about 6 weeks before, so usually mid July is when to put them down.

This looks like Dallisgrass, and if so, it is a terrible weed. The bane of my existence. I've got Bermuda here, which stays pretty short. The Dallisgrass grows nearly quadruple the speed, and sprouts seed heads nearly overnight if we get a good rain. The only surefire way to kill it is to spray it with roundup. Unfortunately. Now, the trick to doing this with warm season grasses is to spray the roundup when your grass is dormant for the winter, since the Dallisgrass stays green a few weeks longer. However, I'm not sure if fescue would offer the same window as bermuda would, so you may want to do some research on it. Ultimately, though, you're going to want to kill these things however possible. Personally, I'm okay with sacrificing a bit of beauty and get the brown patches where I kill the stuff so it doesn't spread more.

For our purposes there are two kinds of plants: grasses and broadleaf plants. Usually they are easy to distinguish from each other. Weed-b-Gon kills many varieties of broadleaf plants like dandelion, dichondra, spurge, dollar weed, and other plants with leaves. Grass has blades making them easy to distinguish from broadleaf plants. There is a product called Grass-b-Gon that would kill the weed, but since it is growing in grass, the GBG product will also kill the surrounding grass. RoundUp would work and so would GBG. You could either paint the weed with RU/GBG or you might be able to mask off the rest of the surrounding grass with cardboard leaving only the weed sticking out. Then spray the weed and remove the cardboard.

Shot weed, Cardamine hirsuta. An annual that grows very early season and has an ability to 'shoot' its seed pods - those long skinny things at the tip of the plant - considerable distances, hence the common name :- ) And it produces seeds in copious abundance!! Ideally, you want to remove as soon as you see the foliage rosette forming in early spring - very shallow rooted and pulls up easily - but certainly once you see any flowers forming and before it goes to seed. Now all you can do is treat with any lawn broadleaved weed killer. But as it has already dispersed a huge number of seeds that will not be addressed by this, prepare to reapply several more times as they continue to germinate before the weather heats up. And it will likely reappear in fall as well.

A broadleaf herbicide should take care of them.

Edit: try Weed B Gon Chickweed Clover and Oxalis.

If there is an independent garden center serving your area ask for suitable products there. Take examples of the weeds you want to be rid of with you.

Not sure of your location, but pre em for crabgrass in a few weeks from now seems pretty past due.....

You can use it after the chickweed has gone to seed but it will only kill the plants, not the seeds. You'll need to eradicate the subsequent offspring, by what ever method you choose, possibly several times if seeding has been going on for some time. How big is the area? Is it impossible to set aside some time and methodically pull the plants out?

Pre-emergent will take care of the seeds. You will want to have pre-emergent down this fall and through winter, your soil is probably loaded with seed.
