mulching for berry patch?

Scott MacDonald

We planted a little berry patch on a slight hill this spring: 2 rows of Blackberries, 2 rows of Raspberries and 4 rows of strawberries. We staggered the closer rows so they won't clump too much and left a wide path in the center as well as between the cane berries and the strawberries (see diagram) to provide access on all sides for picking. The site was previously pasture that we tilled up and mixed in manure evenly, then when actually planting the plants we worked in a little extra compost and potting soil (we have lots of clay so we wanted to ensure good drainage). They seem to be establishing themselves pretty well so far--little buds on the canes and the strawberries have tripled in size over just a week or so!

What should be our next steps before the weather gets hot? Should we mulch around all of them, or just the pathways to keep the grass and weeds at bay? I've read that strawberries need to have their roots kept cool but not so sure that matters with the canes as much. Anyone done a similar patch?
