Meiwa Kumquat, all buds dying, but tree doing well, what's going
Comments (4)Kumquats can alternate bear, so when it was in the ground, probably nothing was wrong. Doubtful you had "bad soil", just needing to be fertilized, and watering needed to be adjusted properly (not too much, not too little). The potting medium you're using is most likely much too dense, retaining too much water, and, if allowed to dry out, becoming hydrophobic (won't absorb water, just runs through the container). So, watch for that. And, it may take a year or so for your poor tree to recover from all the transplant shock, so give it some time if you plan to keep it in a container. Water appropriately, fertilize frequently, but be sure to, on occasion, flush out the container to remove built up salts (to prevent burning). Comments (44)The fruitless under the can light Meiwa has finished its growth spurt with a total of 44 linear inches of new twigs with fresh leaves. It is now tied for the second biggest of seed grown Meiwa kumquat trees I picked the fruit off the other Meiwa tree at half ripe and the skin was sweet and the flesh was very juicy but not much flavor in sweet or sour. I was afraid a mouse would get it and it was the only fruit from a seed grown tree. I also picked all the much ripper fruit from my grafted meiwa and the fruit was sweet skinned with semi sweet tart flesh. very much worth eating. This will actually be the last entry for this thread from Me and I will continue this discussion in "4 seed grown 2 year old Meiwa kumquat tree for year 2019". I will leave a link to the new thread when I start it. forget what I said above. I did not expect this much change in one of the trees. Steve...See More4 seed grown 2 year old Meiwa kumquat trees
Comments (21)All four of my seed grown Meiwa kumquat trees. Largest of my seed grown Meiwa kumquats. -------------------------------------------------------------- Fruitiest of my seed grown Meiwa kumquat. She put on 30 fruit this year and 2 last year. The fruits last year were ripe and low on flavor. A half ripe fruit this year tasted good. Better fruits grow on older trees. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meiwa kumquat second largest of the 4 and the only other one to develop a ripening kumquat What started this spring as #2 fell to #4 in size. This is the only one that has not had a fruit set yet Steve...See MoreMy 4 seed grown Meiwa kumquat trees just turned 4 years old
