5 year old seed grown Longan blooming?
Comments (11)Hi Tony Doe, Your Longan there looks healthy to me and with a few new branches of new reddish leaves. They look very pretty there. I'm thinking if they have new flushes, they ought to have blooms? I'm asking this question as one of mine is also sending out a lot of new flushes and I'm hoping that eventually they'll push out some blooms as well. I've been feeding them with fish emulsion, liquid compost and epsom salt. By the way, thanks so much for the link. The guy there suggested fertilizing with potassium chloride (?) I wonder if that is something you can get from Home Depot. I've read that this chemical has to be handled with cautious as it's something they use in fire crackers. But, if it works, I'm at least going to try as I can't wait to make my bloom for me this year. I don't have luck with growing longans as long as I can remember. I now realized that they are susceptible to web worm and they do not like shady areas. I planted a few of them in the south side of my yard where there are two huge oak trees overhanging and they are host to webworms. So, they died young with disease even though they were planted in the ground. Last year, I planted two more new ones in my north side with plenty of sunshine and they seem to be doing well. Here are some pictures. Biew Kiew is blooming and Kohala is sending out new flushes. Please update how your longan is doing. I do hope it will bloom for you soon. #1 = Longan Kohala Flushing #2 - Longan Kohala (almost 5.5 ft in height now) #3 = Longan Bieu Kiew (almost 4.5ft in height) #4 = Bieu Kiew's blooms....See Moreseed grown in ground Fukushu kumquat trees.
Comments (21)If you opened this thread, I will add the evolution of my fukushu kumquat grafted on rio red grefruit seedling in 2014. It is now in 15-20L airpot, with generic potting soil amended with perlite, keramzit and bark. It is in the new location for 2 months, and this week flowered nicely. New little branches grew from the vertical stem (the last watersprout), growth that stopped now (right after full moon)....See More9 Meiwa kumquat trees from seed
Comments (49)I placed my kumquat seeds between to pieces of damp paper towels in a zipper food bag and placed over my heater duct outlet. Others I planted in potting soil wit a lid over the container and placed inside one of my heating ducts. Both ways took about a week. My last set of 80 meiwa seeds all rotted. Meiwa kumquats are very hard to start. Today I ate my last 2 Meiwa kumquats and saved 10 seed to through outside in the 20F snow. I am not wasting any more time sprouting Meiwa seeds. Its a lot of work. Steve...See Moreseed grown Meiwa kumquat tree
Comments (4)2 summers ago it put on a couple hundred flowers but only 2 set into fruit. Last summer was the 17 year cicadas and I had to keep the tree protected. Citrus trees are preferred over anything else in my environment. Strange, Citrus trees don't grow around here. Smart cicadas. 2 summers ago all 4 of my Meiwa trees put on hundreds of flowers each of which 2 set fruits. This past summer 2 of 4 put on a total of about 30 fruits. I gave the 1 with less fruits to a friend. Steve...See Moreponcirusguy6b452xx
