Two new arrivals
Comments (14)Thanks to all for the responses, they seem to be eager to grow, surprising how well these plants travel. I didn't trim the roots before potting, any slight damage to the very thin roots had sealed over so I thought it best to leave them. The growing mix is just Miracle Gro with lots of perlite, this seems to work for me. When potting I don't compact the mix but just pour it in, the idea is that it will aid aeration, and of course unglazed clay pots. Happy growing, Brian UK....See MoreNew arrival of two miniature xeric broms
Comments (2)Hi Patris, I will pot them up tomorrow morning, as here is now midnight and I can't resist those fierce mosquitos outside :-l Some of my Encholirium sp. 'Vau' and Hechtia spp. seedlings have been aparted from seedling box to new pots. From 200 Encholirium, I estimate and hope that they could make around 120-150 :-). I will post their pics when they do establish well....See MoreRaintree figs and FMV
Comments (9)Amen, james. Unless you have non-infected plants to compare with infected, you really can't tell what effect the virus is having. Your "normal" is an infected plant. Are the obviously impaired plants more susceptible to the virus? Or is there more than one strain of virus - some of which that are more debilitating? We talk of having "the flu", but it isn't all the same virus or same effects. Think bird flu and stomach flu. I went to a NAFEX meeting at Geneva in the early '80's and many of the Cornell apple people were dismissive of the idea of using virus free apples. The "only" problem with apple virus was that it was dwarfing - and they did not see that as a "problem". They were developing dwarfing rootstocks to keep the plants small - and when those were cleaned of virus, the trees got bigger! Better to keep the "dirty" old rootstocks. All apples had virus and it actually helped keep the trees smaller. No problem. You are hearing the same thing from UC Davis - this is a "condition" - no problem. It seems likely to me that "virus" isn't just one thing, but a whole range of things - some worse than others. And, IMHO, you can't tell what effect it is having on a variety (how much of a problem it is) until you see that variety without it....See MoreIrises as photo ops (pix)
Comments (6)Thanks, everyone! I give a lot of credit to the subjects. I have several cameras, but these were taken with a Panasonic Lumix FZ5. I've been happy with the results I get with my Olympuses, too. And, oh yeahÂI remember some good experiences with 35mm film. :-) Susan...See More- 6 years ago
