Do you know of a cast iron farmhouse sink for under $600?
Comments (10)I don't have this sink myself, but I have been reading about it on this forum for years - the Ikea Domsjo sink, an amazing buy at $186. Just remember that the cast iron or fireclay apron front sinks may cost more to install. Some have irregular sides that need very precise scribing of the countertop, and also they are heavy and will need to be supported properly. You could also save money by buying a stainless steel apron front sink, and also have a much easier installation. It is a different look from a white farmhouse sink, but the stainless steel apron front sinks I've seen on this forum are pretty darn sharp. Mama_goose's comes to mind since she used the stainless steel apron front sink in a vintage-style kitchen to really great effect. Kraus makes awesome stainless farmhouse sinks. Comments (1)If you wash dishes in a short top, your navel will get really cold! Cast iron is tough stuff with a long history of use and abuse. Use a mat or plastic dishpan when you handwash your good crystal becuase it's hard, and enjoy a beautiful sink....See MoreYour experience w/ Herbeau/Fireclay/Farmhouse sinks?
Comments (3)A farmhouse sink is something you want to buy locally because of the high potential of problems with shipping damage. And they are a real PIA for your installers do deal with, so they charge more. The main guy I use for installs charges $300-$500 extra just to install a farmhouse sink. But it's worth it, because someone that doesn't know what they are doing can cost you twice that in a damaged sink base or horrible mount. Any white sink is a bit of a pain in that it shows everything. Pots and pans will leave metal marks on it, and if you let things like coffee grounds sit, they will need to be scrubbed-not aggressively-but dried coffee won't just "wipe" out of any sink....See MoreFarmhouse Sink- cast iron or fireclay?
Comments (2)I love my cast iron Kohler Whitehaven. I have the grills for the bottom and it looks as good as the day it was installed 2 years ago. The Whitehaven is also easier to install then a traditional apron front sink so it can also save on installation cost. One problem is that the Whitehaven is on backorder, possibly for a few more months due to a fire at the Kohler plant that makes them. I have always had a cast iron sink and like them. You should look at both fireclay and cast iron in person because occasionally someone will say that they don't like the look of cast iron compared to fireclay. I was also concern about the durability of fireclay. Many are very happy with them, but disaster can happen.
