Can I grow a tree from this?

Today I cut off a large half inche root from a Sugar Maole that is in Aunt’s yard that was growing around the side of the tree above the ground. I pulled it up and had a bunch of feeder roots on the bottom of it and I planted it in a grow bag. I was wondering if I can get it to grow into another tree.

here is a pic of the large root.

If so, how do I get this to live and grow into a new maple tree? Please let me know. Thanks.

I'm no expert on maple propagation but isnt that cutting upside down?

No, That is a large root that I cut off the tree and dug up. I planted it right side up and it has a bunch of feeder roots at the bottom. I was thinking of this to the equivalent of a trunk chop. I was wondering if it will produce new shoots up at the top.

The sucker can eventually form a tree. The thing that would concern me most, especially since you said it was near your house, is that the root system may be insufficient to support the tree as it grows larger. Most of the root system for the sucker will likely be only on the opposite side of the sucker from the original tree. The sucker may form a reliable root system as it grows larger, but it's less likely to do so than a normal seedling. If you do decide to grow the sucker, don't stake it unless you absolute have to for some reason. The sucker will need all the pushing and pulling the wind would normally give it to encourage strong root support. Another thing you might consider is the trouble you will have to go to (not being able to apply a chemical to kill the root system to keep it from suckering all over the place for some time to come, keeping all those suckers cut down, worrying about what will eventually happen as the tree grows larger, etc) relative to the payoff (not having to plant a replacement). Planting a replacement tree will allow you to more effectively deal with the old tree/stump, plant the tree in just the spot you want to, and choose whatever tree you would like. BTW, I'm not trying to talk you out of keeping the sucker...really. I'm just giving you the downsides for consideration.

You can grow from seeds. Oranges take about 4-8 years I have heard, depending on species. Most are true to type, meaning the same as the original, but some are not. They need to grow so many nodes (leaves, for simplicities sake) before they mature and flower and fruit. So providing optimum growing conditions will make them mature quicker.

oppalm: I don't know what you mean by'Is this a great country or what'? What I am saying is a fact. You can go to Walllmart and buy a citrus trees grafted for $9.00 ones that are in pots 4x4x18. They are one year old tree. I can bet that in 2 years time you should have flowers in them. If you want bigger trees go to Home Depot or even Wallmart or Costco or Orchard you can buy citrus trees that have if you are lucky have fruits already in them. My favorite place to go is Home Depot in that most of their ctrus are dwarf and have fruits in them. All you need is wait about 8 months and you can taste the fruit of your labor. Usually the costs are from $19 to $24. Are you insinuating that that is too much? I would like to know how much citrus trees cost in Russia or in Europe if you can find them. I think that price is reasonable considering the expenses they spend from their nursery to the consumer. I am not good in telling you that if you plant a citrus seed and possibly you will not get the same fruit as the mother plant. All I know is what I read in here. I read that the fruit usually are inferior in taste as that of the mother plant. Whereas a grafted tree which you bought from the store are the same plant as the mother plant. They are identical. The citrus plant has nothing to do with USA or country.

It is certainly not the preferred way of doing things but it might work. All you can do at this point is wait and tend to it as required.

Thanks. I got the idea from the idea of some trees suckering expecually maples. I have a couple of silver maples that sucker all the time in the summer.

Did you water it? Looks dry. Nothing will kill a root faster than letting it get dry.

Put it in a shady area and check on periodically until end of this summer. If it doesn't produce leaves by then, it's a goner.

Yeah, I watered it when I put it in there. It looked like that when I dug it up. How do you tell if older wood is alive? I know on younger shoots the cambium is isually green under the bark. I’ve seen on older would it woulld appear brown under the bark even if its alive. I just put more soil in befor taking the picture. I watered the soil that was aleady in the bag before adding more.

i had a silver maple in my childhood home yard ... it was cut down 50 years later ...

in that time period ... of which my parents lived there.. it NEVER suckered ... i wonder about that ID ...

wet your media.. before you put it in a pot.. to insure it is damp .. then after planting.. water in the planting ...
