Rule of thumb for width of drapery panels?
Comments (38)Very helpful thread. So based on what I'm reading, it seems custom is almost always required. But maybe I'm misunderstanding. For example, West Elm sells a standard curtain in 48" W. Assuming one chooses 2.5 for fullness, this means their standard width curtain covers 19.2" wide (48"/2.5=19.2"). So 2 of them (one on each side of the window) will cover a 20" wide window with 4" trim on either side and 4.5" rod overhang on either side with a 2.5 fullness. Collectively the 20" wide window with 4" trim on either side is 28". Then add 4.5" overhang for the rod on each side and we get 37" total. 37/2=19.5. Which is basically what their standard 48" W curtain covers at 2.5 fullness. That is one very small window. I'm struggling to see why the standard curtain would be made to cover such a tiny window. Comments (7)Thank you for your nice words and congratulations on your new home! So exciting. The fabrics are all from Sanderson Fabrics in the UK. (specifically here, here and here) Well, the laddies' bedrooms' project has "started" in that I've interviewed three seamstresses and received yardage requirements from one of them. It may send me to the poorhouse .... Sorry -- no pictures, yet! Maybe in early-mid Spring. ??? Maybe. Hopefully before the boys go off to uni! No, I'm really motivated but finding seamstresses took me some time and then there were the holidays ... go figure. Probably by the end of this week I'll have the fabrics ordered and then we'll go from there. I decided to do basically what les917 suggested for my 3.5 year-old son's room, and for my 18 month-old, he'll have a striped bedskirt, the red car as one side of the duvet, the flags as the other side of the duvet and also to upholster this chair, and the balls fabric for a neckroll. (I'll also have decorative pillows for Li'l Bit as well as a balls fabric neckroll for my older son.) I think it'll be great! And I could not have gotten this far without everyone's help, that is for sure. I look forward to seeing what you do for your son's room!...See MoreMessy Curtains - any advice on improving how they hang? pics
Comments (38)Thanks again to everyone for their nice comments and helpful advice, I really learned a lot from this post. Also I have to give credit to Lindac, who would win the prize if there was one! The pleats looked good after training them, but quickly started to fall out. Since I am obviously obsessed with getting these curtains to look just right (ha ha!) I took them to a seamstress who agreed with Lindac that there was way too much material between the pleats. For a small fee she redid the pleats, and NOW they really look just right!...See MoreSplitting 100w panel into two 50w panels?
Comments (10)Shouldn't be too big a deal...except they won't come out 50" each, but narrower as you have to take the split ends and rehem them. How complicated it is also depends on how the top is finished...if it's pinch pleats then it might be tricky due to the spacing of the pleats. If it's just gathered on a rod pocket, then it should be easy....See Moreeld6161
