Comments (15)I'm not 71 yet, but not too far behind! Glad you can get out there but I understand how you'd like to have more time to plant and enjoy rather than pulling that nasty-sounding weed! Maybe the vinegar will work, but since your garden may smell like a salad anyway, perhaps you should plant some lettuce and save a step............. :-) Thyme2dig, In the cactus garden, I don't plant annuals, nor in the upper bark mulched garden. When I do want to plant a shrub or tree, or perennial, then I do have to cut the fabric. I make an "X" and fold it back, then once the plant is in place, I "guesstimate" the diameter the trunk is, and, depending on the species, growth rate and so forth, I trim the points off the flaps (or tuck them under if not too big) to create a suitable opening so that the fabric doesn't bunch. Then I fold the flaps down and cover with mulch again, and voila! But I don't add plants too often, since I enjoy waiting to find special things for certain spots. Also, the existing plants grow in and the dynamic of the garden changes. Where I thought I might have needed a plant a couple of years ago now seems full enough to let the existing plants develop, or maybe I could use a smaller plant in the space than I originally thought. A work in progress, and a joy. The weeds I pull are seedlings, a couple of inches tall and these are just growing in the mulch, not below the fabric. A 20 minute walk around the garden once a week keeps things pretty much in check....See Moreplant clearance sale Mello's in Portsmouth RI - Great!
Comments (7)Hi Isabella and Digging, nice to meet you both. I've just heard about RF Morse, but I've never been there. I will have to check it out. It would be a great place for a nursery tour day! I've driven by Blueview, but never had the chance to stop in. My job takes me all over SE MA. On any given I could be down the Cape or up in Quincy or over in Sharon. I usually try to check out anything nearby at lunch. Yes, Digging, it would be on the Aquidneck Island (to Newport) side of the Mount Hope bridge. Blithewold is on the other side of the bridge actoss the bay in Bristol near Rogers Williams University. Is Mahoney's in Falmouth? I'll have to keep that in mind when I'm in that area. Isabella, my sister (Somerset) and I (Swansea) have been trying to find contacts to maybe have plant swap type of get-together once or twice a year. You are pretty colse to us, would you be interested?...See MoreNewly planted April Dawn - R.I.
Comments (9)Well, could be but not necessarily also so check the soil pH to really confirm. I could not tell from the picture but, it did not seem as if the veins remained dark green and the rest was a light green or yellow. After a while of being in alkaline soils, I would also have expected to see more than one leaf with iron chlorosis signs. Also, this is a new leaf and new leaves can be temporarily more sensitive to everything. For example, I have had some new leaves turn shades of green like that and also turn to shades of bronze. Then after a few weeks, they turn darker greens without me doing anything. In that case, I suspect the sun exposure diminised as nearby deciduous trees leafed out and then the leaves went back to normal. So ck it (the soil pH) out. Here is another way to find out... If you have colored hydrangeas planted nearby or if you know someone who does, take a look at their blooms. Provided that the owner of the plant has not amended the soil to change the hydrangea's colors, acidic soils should produce blooms with shade of blue, neutral or slightly acidic soil should produce purples and alkaline soils should produce shades of pink. Processed coffee grounds do not have much acidifying effect so I doubt they will tweak things that much. I would try 1 cup of vinegar diluted in 1 gallon of water the next time that you water by hand. Or garden sulfur, greensand, iron-chelated liquid compounds (sold at most plant nurseries), etc....See MoreWhere to buy clementine mandarin trees in greater Boston (MA/RI)?
Comments (7)Thanks for your recommendations. Logee's prices for their citrus trees are actually lower than what I've come across online... One of the first such online sites that popped up in my search was FastGrowingTrees.com and while the customer reviews seem reliable, a "1-2 ft" Clementine starts at $39.95 and goes up to $79.95 (at 3-4ft) and that is with the 20% holiday discount. I also started to get interested in peaches...Their Redskin Peach tree starts at $89.95 (4-5ft). Which seems quite exorbitant to me, considering the same size sells for $27.25 on Isons website...Even with the $15-20 shipping, that is still cheaper. Since this is my first time with fruit trees, can someone tell me if these prices are the norm?...See MoreFlo Mangan
