Help! Mailbox and Rock Question
Comments (3)clematis like evenly moist soil, which tends to be cooler than arid soil, eh? so if you pile TOO much stuff on top of it, you're going to go from 'mulching' to 'waterproofing' the ground around them, eh? one big rock, and a short-rooted groundcover should be plenty - I've got creeping speedwell and a short day lilly shading mine, and she's doing just fine. do remember, however, that the first year or two, they will spend their energy putting out roots, not flowers - the old saw is 'sleep the first year, creep the second, leap the third'...See MorePlanting flowers around mailboxes

Comments (4)Ha!! Love the rocks! :) Maybe some kind of blooming native plant would work out well -- black-eyed susans, coneflowers, something like that. They're fairly common, but they're tough as nails and don't need much fussing-over once they're established. Our mail carrier has serious allergies to bees and wasps, and has asked the neighborhood (very nicely) to avoid planting blooming things near the mailboxes. We'd like some decoration out there, though, so we're thinking of putting in a clump of native grass behind ours this year. (We're pretty fond of the big grasses!)...See MoreDesign around mailbox
Comments (9)I would most likely choose a series of prairie plants of good size for the side and back areas. Try to have varied textures and something blooming much of the growing season. Do you want winter interest or will the snow make that unneeded? Do folks typically access this from a car or do most folks walk to pick up mail? If there is a good set of walkers, I might add a bench for anyone who wants to stop and sort or look at some of the mail before walking back home....See More- 6 years ago
