Hiding a TV in niche above fireplace
Comments (12)kellilou, that is a lovely and interesting floor plan. You're right, you've got a lot going on in that room. Open floor plans are challenging. I can see why you want to put it above the FP, but really and truly before paper goes to reality, you should rig your TV to that height and watch it that way for a couple weeks. I suppose with a few changes you could move the fireplace into the foyer area, which could be very cozy. But of course you are going to want it to be the focal point of your family room. I'm stumped! I would not want to see you move the FP to the the right of where it is now (in the corner) and the TV where the FP now is. We have that situation in this house -- corner FP and no place to put the TV cabinet but on the adjacent wall. Thanks to a very talented and expensive designer, it has been worked out to look good. But it is not optimal!...See MoreCustom TV and TV Niche Doors - Lot of Photos
Comments (69)Thanks, Teresa. Would love to see photos of your home. I'll have to do a search later. Squirrel, it is antique pine. I do not cut directly on the counter at all. When needed, I use a cutting boards either on the island or next to the range. Don't cut directly on the granite either. We are good about wiping away water splatters after washing hands or dishes. I have never left a glass sitting on the counter overnight, so I don't know what that would do. The guys just asked me about that when they were here installing the tv cover. The pine is finished with Good Stuff for Wood which is FDA approved for food prep surfaces. I order from the below link. Have only recoated twice in 27mths. I clean the island with a damp sponge and have started using Lysol wipes too. Here is a link that might be useful: Good Stuff for Wood...See MoreNeed help with mantle decor and paint color please. Comments (6)I think I would remove everything from the mantle/cabinet and paint it one shade deeper than the wall it is on. Then fill the niches with large pottery, baskets, or metal bins. Leave the mantle empty and possibly two wrought iron wall sconces for a large fat candle on either side of fireplace. This picture shows some elements that might translate to your fireplace area. Color of fireplace is similar to wall. Basket adds texture that would look good in the niches The pottery vases and tall big plantings help balance the weight of the whole fireplace wall. I think it would also be nice if you had doors made for the side niches and use the center niche for a large filling plant in pottery, metal, or basketry....See MoreAdvice for decorating large, very tall wall with niches in family room
Comments (8)Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I've considered closing the niche above the fireplace, but that will leave only 6" on the mantle which isn't much space for decor. I agree that it would allow more options for art up above. I do have a large chest to the left of the fireplace right now. The trouble with that is there is little space for traffic between it and the end of the sectional. If I shift it left, it looks off balance and is facing a direct walking path. And I don't really want to rotate the sectional against the windows although that would improve the narrow traffic problem. All the above pics were taken after the wood floor was refinished, but before I put any accessories, decor, etc. back up. I wanted to show a "blank slate". (I am working on getting an area rug) If I stick with everyone's suggestions, my next questions are: How high up should I try to decorate the fireplace niche? And should I do anything behind the tv? I've had nothing there and it looks blank, and I've put up a very large piece of art and it looks too busy. It seems like there are too many focal points. Here are some pics that show earlier attempts at decorating. The silver vase with floral is probably close to 48" high. Please ignore the floral behind the tv, that is not normally there. Pic #1 was right before they moved the furniture out for the flooring, so all my extras were already in storage....See Moredeegw
