Harriet's New House, New Kitchen - Ikea cabinet smell?
Comments (7)I was just at Ikea today looking at kitchen cabinets with the intention of buying them for my kitchen. i could not help but notice a strong odor in every cabinet that I opened In the store. i believe the smell is emanating from the sides of the cabinet boxes which are constructed of particle board and glue and resin. The smell escapes from the holes drilled in the sides. I think the smell will continue to out gas for years. ikea is supposedly CARB2 and EPA compliant , I must say, it gives me pause. and it is for this reason that I won’t buy Ikea cabinets. i don’t want to pay thousands of dollars to introduce a chemical smell into my house....See MoreJust a heads-up: IKEA Laxarby to be discontinued
Comments (24)I just bought 3 Lerhyttan kitchens (renovating a triplex) and I can tell you why. The grey cabinets look ridiculous. It looks like the frames have 2-3 coats of grey stain, and the middle panels have 1 thin layer. As a result, you can see the color of the ash veneer through the middle panel. If the frames matched, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad look, but when they're different, it's a strange two-tone effect that looks like poor manufacturing. I did black for my lowers and grey for my uppers. The black ones are fine, which is why they haven't been recalled. I guess Lerhyttan will be available in grey again early next year. Since there's a 365-day return policy, I'm just going to hold onto my crappy ones for now, since I already have everything. When the new ones are offered again, I'll exchange everything. Thankfully, IKEA doors are super easy to take on and off. No tools required. I do kinda wish they'd keep some of the Lerhyttan grey accessories for sale, though, for people in my situation. As I said, it's the door panels that are the problem. Everything else is fine. I think I might need some more deco strips, for example, and now I'm not sure if I can get them until early next year....See Morenew sliding barn door style
Comments (19)Yes... well not me... my hubby... but we pick them out together, and we choose which planks go in which order together, and I do all of the finish work like any staining or Waterlox. If we are doing any painting (like we did on the cabinetry, which hubby also built in our garage) then I do any painting if it's done by brush, but hubby does all painting with the spray gun. He's particularly good with the spray gun, but I'm much better with a brush than he is. But yeah... the wood was all joined together and my 7 foot Long Island was sticking out past 10 feet before we held our breath and he pulled the trigger on the saw to make the cuts for the waterfall edge on the island. We had never done anything quite like that before and we'd paid a premium for boards that were long enough for this purpose. We figured if the cut was messed up we would use the edge meant for the waterfall for some other purpose one day and then we'd just end up with a wood top and cabinet panels for both sides instead of just one side. (The side closest to my sink is a cabinetry panel with an electric outlet and a towel bar for dish towels.) He must've measured the thing a gazillion times before he made the cut, LOL! But it came out perfectly and we were very pleased. There are some minor mistakes in other areas of the countertop, but most anybody would be hard pressed to notice them, but that waterfall cut went just perfectly. Whew! LOL!...See MoreIkea + custom doors - can doors get installed last?
Comments (25)@jdesign_gw, thanks. I gave up on the extra complications awhile back. Ordering at least two Godmorgons and sticking with the IKEA sinks (and probably faucets). The Cabinet Face and a few others offer side panels as well as drawer fronts in the wood veneers, so I'm going with that. And I sent my G.C. to IKEA (and provided videos) so he could see the plumbing differences. :) I was just asking the question in case somehow we wrecked a drawer front at some point. Wondering how difficult it is to replace (do you have to take the whole thing apart, or replace the whole cabinet too?)....See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
