The males and females are not very different in appearance, but usually the singing males draw attention to themselves. In grassland areas, they will perch on fence posts, or the tops of shrubs or trees, and sing. I haven't visited, nor birded, much of Indiana. Do you live near the grassland habitat that the meadowlarks frequent? Both Eastern and Western are listed for Kankakee Sands; Eastern at Patoka Lake grassland areas, if you live near one of those. I also vaguely recall some converted, or abandoned, mining grasslands where they are seen, but don't remember the name of the sites.

Thanks gyr_falcon. I asked because I'm a big puzzler. I saw a puzzle that had 2 meadowlarks sitting on a fence close to each other, and I had never seen 2 together before. They looked alike, so I wondered if one were a female. Sounds like it could have been. I'm kinda fussy that my puzzles make sense. Like when they put 12 different varieties of birds on top of a feeder at the same time......that just doesn't happen. At least not here. :) Here's one I finished last week. Yes, we have meadowlarks in our field. Not enough though!
