Identify this beautiful Eucalyptus
Hello, desperately need help identifying this vigorous Eucalyptus which I see flourishing in suburbs of Perth. It appears very well suited to the area and grows to good height.

Comments (3)the capsules are not ready to harvest until they turn from green to brown or grey. look carefully at the top (flat) end of the capsule if they are opened up/split apart the tiny seed has already been shed. if the capsules are unopened, take a bunch put them in a paper sack and place them in a warm dry place indoors for a week or so---hopefully the capsules will then open and you can collect the seed from the sack. they can then be shed on top of a seed-starting medium (do not cover) and kept in a warm moist environnemt (indoors) and should sprout in about a week. they are qenerally quite easy to start but may be difficult to grow on outside as tiny seedlings are tender to cold so will probably have to be kept indoors their first winter. BTW, gunnii is fairly easy to get from nurseries especially online nurseires like forestfarm in williams, oregon it might be worthwhile to consider getting a "ready-made" plant rather than going thru the complete seed raising route. good luck....See MoreHelp identifying a eucalyptus species
Comments (9)Hmmm. I think this is a Sugar Gum Eucalyptus cladocalyx, native to several small, isolated areas in South Australia. Does this tree have a lot of oozing gum staining the ground dark brown around the base? If so this would also indicate it is a Sugar Gum. The expanse of the root zone is probably roughly proportionate to its height. In the Flinders Ranges Sugar Gum grows to about 35 metres but it's smaller on Eyre Peninsula. It's also smaller on the north coast of Kangaroo Island where it's probably affected by its greater exposure to salt & sea winds. Outside its natural range it can develop into quite a tall tree. Be wary of planting rows of this species because they cause wind speed to increase as the wind passes between the trees (known as Bernoulli's principle). 8 years agoNo they don't look anything like E. (now Corymbia) citriodora seedlings. Well except that they have leaves & stems. . . . :) E (C).citriodora have a very different looking juvenile growth with wavy edged ensiform leaves covered with bristles & minute warty growths. To see quite representative pics of E.citriodora seedlings take a look at: http://www.louistheplantgeek.com/a-gardening-journal/508-corymbia-citriodora you'll notice that the petiole is surrounded by leaf at the junction almost like it is stuck to the back of the leaf. Could be Karri as the pics of the trees look like it with white smooth trunks with dark rough bases & the seedlings could be.
Eucs never cease to amaze me & we have just found that E.deglupta thrives in SA both in Adelaide & in the hills. This is a tropical giant which is the only Euc that grows nth of the equator yet it is thriving on Mt Lofty in what can only be described as a cold climate (at least for here & in winter : )
