Viking baffles filters - how to clean

I have a Viking professional hood with 2 baffle filters and in the 1 year I've had them I am having the worst time figuring out how to clean them.

Currently, once a month, I'm spraying with an oven cleaner outside and leaving it under a covered patio area for the night and then wiping with a damp towel and using a dry toothbrush to scrub between baffles. It's a lot of work.

I've read that people are putting them in the dishwasher and I have tried that but they come out with what feel like particles of soap dried all over. I use Kirkland brand soap packets that you put in the dishwasher still dry and have tried rinse aid but same result. Is there a different dishwasher detergent I should use?

Is there a way to make this easier? We cook daily and ideally I'd like to clean the baffles twice a week, but I can't seem to find a way that would make this easier.

Yes, it has cleaned out all of the areas you can't reach without cutting up your fingers...
I have four baffles... I have to do two separate dishwashing loads to clean all of my baffles, I can't fit all four in at the same time. I put one on the bottom rack, one on the top... and I put in other dishes as they will fit. (We have a large family, so our dishwasher runs at least twice a day anyways)
I'm not as diligent as you about how often I clean my baffles... they're usually pretty greasy by the time I'm like "okay.... guess I'll clean them now." LOL! After they're done I just set them on the counter to finish drip drying off all the water. I do always have to clean my dishwasher filter after each load though... it gets too mucked up if I don't.

I wash mine in the dishwasher too (tried hand washing them after soaking them in the sink with a lot of Dawn once... too much work!) but I haven't had that happen.
I usually use Kirkland brand detergent as well... but I realized that every time I run my baffles through the dishwasher I use Cascade Fryer boil out instead of my usual detergent. Hubby got a case of it when we were having dishwasher troubles and were checking to see if it was the detergent or not. (It wasn't... we figured out the problem... but I had all this Fryer boil out detergent so I use it when I wash the baffles, LOL! It works great for me!)

skmom I'm willing to try anything at this point. I just ordered Cascade Fryer boil out and hopefully that works for us! Thankyou

I am going to guess by the instructions and cautions that the hood has some sort of oil/grease collection system for the oils and grease caught by the baffle or mesh filter system. We just put in the Prestige America high capacity liner. It has a baffle filter system with front and rear rows of baffles each that angle upward and meet in the center like a roof pitch. The bottom end of each row rests in a channel/slot. Prompted by your post to check, I took out the baffles and the baffles and channels were full of oils after only about 6 weeks of use. I cleaned it good and threw the baffles in the DW to clean. I guess the things are doing a good job! Cleaning seems easy enough but a word of caution. If you get a baffle system, they work well and I prefer them but the blades are REALLY sharp. The first one I had was Wolf and it was just as sharp as the Prestige. Either wear gloves to remove and replace them or only touch the outside frame of the baffle. The Prestige actually has a small metal tab in the center of each baffle to help lift them out.

Hi Texas Gal, My hood is the RA0236SQB-1 model, a chimney-style that seems to be phased out in favor of a newer model. Overall, I'm very happy with it, although it may not mean much as prior to installing it last April I had no active ventilation in my kitchen. After the rotary switches failed and were replaced (within the warranty window), there has been no issue with this hood. I also don't expect any, as it's a simple, mechanical appliance, a fan driven by a brush-less AC motor installed in a steel box. Having sad this, I think that you're looking at a different hood: http://www.koberangehoods.com/product/RA-028SQB-WM-1.html. If that's right, then you're talking about a different animal. The depth is only 19.5", which means poor effluent capture. The baffles look different too and I couldn't find a picture showing the underside so it's not obvious how much is covered by baffles. While a film of grease is expected on the fan blades, generally any accumulation is thrown off onto a nearby surface. This is why baffles are commonly used in commercial hoods -- to capture the larger particle size end of the grease particle spectrum before it condenses on the ducting, or is thrown onto the fan housing. Nonetheless, in commercial cooking conditions there is still some grease extraction at the blower, and commercial (usually up-blast) blowers have a drain for removing what is captured. In a residential application, given a reasonable hood setup with appropriate filtering, the rate of grease build-up in the ducts and at the blower (roof blower say) can be expected to be remarkably low. Indoor grilling or high duty wok cooking might lead to some measurable grease at an external blower. In commercial circumstances where environmental considerations force capture of a larger part of the grease particle spectrum, commercial hood systems employ sequential filter systems and a blower capable of the desired flow rate at the pressure loss of the stacked filters.

Why would you put the screens on the bottom rack and use heat? You can still utilize the cleaning power of the DW, even with aluminum screens. You just don’t use the traditional abrasive alkaline DW detergent. Having multiple sets does help. But nothing helps if you don’t make yourself do it. This is like the semi annual cleaning of the dryer duct. Everyone always has good intentions, and only get motivated to deal with it regularly AFTER the fire happens to THEM. Both are fire hazards in your home that require simple and easy maintenance. Just DO it.

skmom Does the cascade boil out also clean underneath the baffles where they are hard to reach? I'm not sure if I'm explaining that well but essentially does it clean the whole baffle filter uniformly? Also how much are you adding per load?

Oh... I'm adding enough powder to mostly fill up the soap dispenser in my dishwasher.

I have a Viking hood with baffles and wash them in my dishwasher on a regular basis. I usually spray the baffles with windex before putting them in the dishwasher to help cut the grease (if they are really bad I’ll windex and then scrub the grooves lightly with a toothbrush to loosen the grease). Bosch dishwasher and I use 7th generation soap and Cascade rinse Aid. Works like a charm!

mle0782 Oh this is very interesting! Does the windex cut the grease? Do you spray and put them in your dishwasher or let them sit awhile?

I also have a Bosch dishwasher that is under a year old and someone posited that it was possible the dishwasher wasn't as effective because it was energy efficient.

My Bosch is a 16 year old, energy efficient model (by the standards when we bought it) and it usually does fine. Sometimes, I will let the baffles sit in the washer after I windex them but not consistently.

I realize this thread is a bit old but, thought I’d share what I’ve learned over the past two years with Viking range & pro hood.
I spray Krud Kutter on baffles, let sit about 30 mins, then use a microfiber cloth, a little dish soap and hot water to easily wash away the grease. For the inside of hood, I use the handheld steamer from my Shark steam mop, apply steam to fairly small area at a time, then wipe away grease with a wet microfiber cloth. The whole process takes me less than an hour. I believe the microfiber cloth is key!
I clean the baffles monthly, or more often if needed (we cook 3 to 5 times a week) and the inside hood, quarterly - or more often, if needed. If I can smell the “old grease smell” when not near the stove, I know it needs to be cleaned.
Hope this helps anyone who might need it.

I have a fairly older model recirculating fan: VWH3010SS, so my fan does not vent to the outside. From the info I have, the filters last six months to a year. They are charcoal filters and cannot be cleaned in the dishwasher. They can be removed and wiped down for general cleaning.
