Need help for landscaping ideas on new backyard
Comments (3)" I wanted to do some type of patio in the middle with planting around the edges... Our intention is strictly landscaping, no structure." Since "landscaping" can consist of anything that might be in the landscape: walks, wall, drive, fence, plantings, etc.... we might not know what you mean by "no structure"... after you say you want to do "some type of patio...". SOMEONE must think of what goes where (do the design) and it will either be you with assistance from here, or it will be a designer that you hire. If you think you want to design the space, you might start be creating a scale base plan that shows the existing elements that will remain. Posting the base plan here will make it easier for people to comprehend the space and you will need it anyway if you're going to do the design. Including pictures that show how the space relates to the house and surrounding areas will be useful. So far, the pictures don't give a feel for how the house and space work together. Wouldn't you want a pathway connection between house and patio? So far, we can't see where that could possibly go. (The first picture is no good because of the intense shadow.) (BTW, you can post multiple photos in the same post; just list the code for each in succession.) It will be helpful if you describe in greater detail your objectives. For example, what size of a patio? Any thoughts on material to make it from? Want shade? Privacy? Screening? Etc. If you have an idea of the size, shape and location for a patio, you should show it and get feedback on it....See Moreneed idea for doing landscaping around a drain in backyard
Comments (1)Build a low, square, cedar box that you can set over that drain. You can use if for a seat, and/or put plotted plants on it. And you can simply lift it and move it if you need access. As for the "toilet plumbing thing," you're going to have to provide more detail or a picture....See MoreHelp!? My backyard has a slope, what can i do!?
Comments (4)No drainage issues, The yard is in a suburb of Maryland, 20715, sunset zone 7a, I would say maybe 2-3hours of solid sunlight, its in a shaded area due to the big magnolia tree next to it and the bushes on the other side, other side of fence is my neighbors yard, and im still debating to hire or diy some more pictures to help...See MoreAny ideas on what to do with a large sloped area in the backyard?
Comments (23)Two comments stand out. First, "it doesn't rain much here"; second, "I assume this slope has survived ok for the past 70 years". The rain issue - if you are in a region which is on the dry side now, a heavy rainstorm could cause a flash flooding issue. Second, as with infrastructure which is 70 years old, if maintenance is not performed - or an inspection by a civil engineer at the least - you could have a slope failure. It is hard to know what type of weight is above the wall or if structural changes have taken place at the properties above you which could cascade down to you. I would have a professional (engineer, not landscaper) assess the site to point out possible issues. If you rebuild any part of it, I would incorporate some type of drain/ditch/trench along the bottom of the wall to help divert possible runoff from running into your house. If you do rebuild, at least a couple of stepped terraces would seem prudent. Then, I would replant with something native that would be beneficial for the slope stability. Not knowing your region, I couldn't begin to make a suggestion. But deep roots, ability to withstand drought, lower in height, and spreading should be qualities to look for in a shrub. You can always intersperse clumps of colorful perennials for pollinators amongst low growing greenery....See More- 6 years agolast modified: 6 years ago
