Paniculata grafting / budding ?

When paniculata hydrangeas are grafted (say as a standard), what is the preferred method of doing so? ... cleft or bark grafting or summer budding? Instead of digging out and replacing certain specimens, I'd like to rework them and thus utilize the strong root system that already exists.

The standards that I have seen (so far) in plant nurseries here in the States are not grafted. The wholesalers select from amongst all the stems, one that is particularly straight and develop it and cut down all the way the ones which they do not want to develop as a leader trunk.

However, I have seen paniculatas for sale in Canada that are grafted. Not sure if it is to put super duper big extra winter hardy roots or what. I contacted the wholesaler but failed to get a response to my question of why they (the wholesaler) were doing that.

Basically, over here, paniculata owners who do tree paniculata forms will evaluate the new/old growth each year and cut off those stems that they do not want to use as a main trunk and leave a handful that appear as good choices/candidates. With each passing Spring, less stems are left until one single stem remains as the main trunk. I think hyed has a nice Vanilla Strawberry Tree that -I think- he "developed" himself (not sure if hyed is a 'he' or 'she'; defaulted to 'he'; sorry if this wrong hyed!).

Kfoxxed, I have to give credit where credit is due. ‘My’ set-up and procedures for T-Budding and rooting cuttings are based on what I have been able to gather from the internet and books. Also my interest in propagating roses only started four years ago so I am actually rather inexperienced. Forums like Garden Web (Houzz) and HMF have been an invaluable source of information! Members like mgleason56(Michigan 5b), goerge mander, seil and roseseek, to name just a few, are so knowledgeable on the subject and I am so grateful to all of them for sharing their experience. I root my cuttings 99% according to George Mander’s ‘Own Root Cuttings Setup’ which you can find here as well as on Help Me Find or on his website George Mander's Roses of Excellence . I say 99% because I use coco coir as suggested by mgleason instead of sunshine mix. I also found what I think is a very good article by Dao Mai called ‘Rose Propagation for Home Gardeners’ (originally distributed by http://roseexchange.biz/roseexchange) which I basically follow to the letter for T-Budding. You will often read that there are many factors which influence success or failure when it comes to roses that I think it is just a case of experimenting to see what works best for you – and that’s the fun thing about it:)

Is rootstock grafted then budded for multi graft trees?

I have a multigraft Asian pear on OHxF333. I believe that D'Anjou pear is grafted onto the OHxF333 rootstock and then 4 varieties of Asian pears are clip budded onto the Anjou whip. So the Anjou is acting as an inter-stem. Ultimately the tree is a 5x1 because I can still get the euro pear from the tree. I also have a 4x1 cherry on G5 rootstock. It has 3 sweets along with Montmorency. I've always read that you can't graft Tart cherry to sweet cherry. That makes me think that the G5 rootstock is grown into a whip and then all 4 varieties are budded onto the whip. What shoots this theory down is that the tree appears to have a graft union low to the ground. So I'm not sure whats going on. lol

nmfruit, It's been a decade or more since I did any - summer tends to be too busy a time for me to steal any time for grafting/budding. But... I don't have any doubt that I could go right out there and stick some t-buds on, and they'd do just fine. Never personally had any issues with excessive bleeding being a problem on mulberries; pecan/walnut, yes, but not mulberry. I suppose if you were worried about that, you could make 1 or 2 girdling cuts below the bud placement (NOT removing bark, just a quick 'slash' with your grafting knife, partially encompassing the circumference of the stem). You might even try an 'inverted' T-bud placement... that may minimize, even more, any issues with excessive bleeding. All I can say is... go for it!

Sandy, Those two blooms are quite something. I really like the first one and they are on the same plant or does it change as the bloom gets older? Yes, those V Grafts can be quite bad. The good thing is that they do get better and less noticeable when the plant is older. Rick

Hee hee hee! Thanks Ed. Good to know. I suspected but was not sure.

Say, one question. Over here, there are some shrubs that get shaped into similar tree shapes. They are called Crape Myrtles but resemble Lilacs. The CMs here are shaped into tree form with multiple trunks as opposed to single trunks. Have you ever seen a standard paniculata that had multiple trunks? I never saw one in my travels through New Hampshire, Mass, Vermont or in Georgia. Of course, I was not looking for multi-trunk specimens. Just wondered if you had ever seen a Crape Myrtle-like (multiple trunks) paniculata in your travels .

Luis, I appreciate your indepth reply and hyed that 'Vanilla Strawberry' sure does look great when pruned up like that! I have a 'Little Lamb' I'd like to take the snipers to and create the same effect. I should have worded my original post more specifically, I wish to rework some hydrangeas over to another variety, these will be cut back and either grafted or budded. An acquaintance in the nursery trade might possibly be able to tell me what type of grafting best suits paniculatas and if not, I'll just go ahead and experiment for myself :)
