Please help me convince my husband

God help me, my husband has decided to renovate our shower because the tiles installed in the 1980's by the previous owners were starting to fall off. We were using duct tape to keep them in place until we decided what to do. TBH, the temporary solution was working fine and probably could have lasted another month or two, which would have given us time to put aside funds for a contractor. He started the work in February. We are not done yet. Now that you've had the background of the project and see that he used purple board that he had since painted with three coats of Redgard (why purple board?!?), Here's the dilemma: He wants to finish this project off with paint, which he just revealed to me last week.. After he installed the purple board. I'm at my wits end. He is an incredibly intelligent man who has taught himself virtually every aspect of construction, including plumbing and electrical, roofing, you name it. He was a flooring and tile specialist at his job when he was a young adult. Usually I trust his judgment, but this just seems wrong to me. Is there any way to salvage this? Like an epoxy pool paint or marine paint? Hell, I'll polyurethane it when he's done. He refuses to use surround because he insisted that the shape of our shower, which is admittedly awkward, wouldn't make it possible. Please tell me there's a cure all solution to this where I won't be calling a contractor in a year to rip all this out and do it properly. I'm hoping to sell this house in a few years and I can't imagine potential buyers will be impressed...
