So when you are ready to move to your new home...
Comments (18)I second getting the floors done before you move in. I wish we had done that in our tv room. The carpeting is 10 year old builder's grade stuff with a couple stains on it. We didn't care when we bought because we knew we'd be upgrading the carpet in a couple years once are kids are less likely to spill stuff on it. Well, now we have a HUGE entertainment center with a projection tv in that room, and there's no WAY that thing will be moving anytime soon. Which means no redoing that carpet until we move out of the house. Fortunately, we can recarpet the stairs and second floor (which is that same 10 year old builder's grade), and figure we'll just give a carpet allowance for the TV room to the buyers we sell to in the future. As for paint, I recommend waiting until you are in the house. In our old house, we lived with the nasty wallpaper until we decided what we wanted to do in each room, and then we tackled stripping the wallpaper and painting. We did a room every few months until it was all done....See MoreRenovating a 1890s Queen Ann style New Orleans home
Comments (59)Welcome to the forum. I've renovated in the Lower Garden District and our first home was behind Fat Harrys. Sadly, we've left NOLA. But, renovating there is an adventure. Don't forget that you will need to tip the inspector when he does you the courtesy of inspecting the installation of those new on-demand hot water heaters. $20.00 should do it. Number one priority is to take care of any water issues, roof, gutters, drains and foundations. Formosan's are the enemy. Second priority is the electrical. Everything else can wait unless someone is making their debut. Looks like that could be a while. In which case, you can just do a New Orleans paint job:) (You will never understand that unless you have lived in New Orleans.) Plenty of good spots for that Rex memorabilia, too. Can't wait to see what you do to the old girl. Just don't be in too big a hurry to get it all done for the Junior League Tour of Homes. They can wait. If you rush, you make mistakes. Best of luck to you. These are labors of love that should keep you busy for this lifetime and into the next. Boy, this makes me home sick....See MoreNew Layout, Should we move the stairs?
Comments (9)Would you consider instead creating a second small laundry area in the new master addition, if your goal is to have a laundry closer to the bedrooms? I have two laundries. One upstairs, front loader, adjacent to the master. One in the garage, top loader, for work clothes, rugs, camping clothes and bedding, bulky items, etc. You're running plumbing lines, anyway. to the bath addition. Maybe use part of the existing closet?...See MoreNew home construction (contractor) is moving slow, Please advise
Comments (23)It's a common issue. It took over a year and a half for my house to be built far enough for me to be able to move in. Even if your GC wants to work all the time only on your place, he has to wait on subs and professional electricians, plumbers etc. On supplies to arrive. For inspections to happen. In my locale, permitters and inspectors only appear to work one day a week or pretty close to that. And yes, my GC had his slow moments I still can't account for on top of that. I took over the painting of the basement and a few other minor things after I was legal and living here. (Pro work in the way of aesthetics in an unfinished basement was not necessary, since I never plan to "finish" it anyway. I like seeing where pipes run so I can spot leaks before they get out of hand.)...See MoreJenn TheCaLLisComingFromInsideTheHouse
