Corkscrew Hazelnut Tree
Comments (7)thx corky .... is this one European??? mine was sold as harry lauders walking stick ... and i had it.. long before i learned the latin.. which sure helps using search engines ... a second issue with HLWS was that they can sucker wildly ... and they all will.. eventually .... and many that do.. are not grafted on contorted understock .... so you ended up it straight pieces growing like mad.. up thru the corkscrew plant .. though mine got the disease.. its suckers were also corkscrew.... win some.. lose some ... ken...See MoreTrain hazelnuts into tree?
Comments (3)It doesn't really matter when you cut the excess stems back. You'll be repeating the operation for ever because hazel wants to be a multi stemmed shrub. As well as the nuts it is that genetic predisposition to produce a constant crop of straight rods which has made it a boon to humanity for building, weaving, fencing, firewood etc over the centuries. I've trained a wild Corylus avellana to be a small tree, just out of interest, but it never produced a really solid central trunk like a crab apple. You'd need to stake the main stem to keep it vertical. But if you want an honest opinion I wouldn't bother. Corylus colurna is an attractive, genuinely tree-form, hazel species which is often seen as a street tree over here. I don't know if it would grow where you are....See MoreHazelnut advice for 9A?
Comments (0)Trying to grow hazelnuts in zone 9A near Ocala. I tried planting hazels I brought with me from up north, but they cannot take the heat. I have seen a couple of folks claim they have hazels growing, but not much in the way of details. They are my favorite nut, and fruit early and often! Anyone have advice on: 1) growing hazels in Ocala area 2) sources for southern hazels - preferably hybrids that have larger nuts 3) anyone growing exotics like Turkish hazel? I had 2 trees in MN and they were very pretty....See Morehazelnut advice for Florida?
Comments (14)Thanks for the warning on the jojoba, I will look into that further! I had thought it was odd that no one but the seller had mentioned growing them as a food source and was going to dig deeper, but I quit gardening for a year right after I got those seeds. Next year when I start up again I had planned to dive in more specifically to the compact nut growing problem. There have been a lot of plants I had never heard of, and a few of them not widely discussed, which I have had to learn to grow and use safely since moving to FL. often new foods have a learning curve and come with specific risks if not handled and prepared properly. I research unusual plants pretty heavily before trying to actually eat anything new, but I suppose other people may not do that (scary thought), so thank you for responding with that caveat....See Morekaesgarden
