Key Limes and 'ever-bearing'
Comments (4)I believe it is determined by the cultivar AND the climate. My Eureka and Pomona Sweet Lemons, Bearss Lime, Thornless Mexican Lime all have flowers, small fruit, and large fruit on the trees. When I lived on the beach, I had a Eureka that sometimes had 4 flowerings per year unless it got really cold that year. It only froze once in the decade I lived there....See Morecitrus true from seed
Comments (21)Hi Christi-- Can take many weeks to sprout from seed, and I find that it varies depending on what you're growing. What seems to really help is heat--you can use a seedling mat or whatnot; I plant into peat and use a desklamp with a 40 watt bulb over it as a heat source. Works fine. I had planted some and left them in a windowsill in the fall, and I would say it took a good 60-90 days to sprout. I don't have any experience with fruit grown from seed, apparently many citrus *can* take many years to flower and fruit--there is info on this forum for that--though Key limes and calamondins can be more rapid, flowering in a couple of years. So you may want to try either of those. If you want a plant that can fruit quickly and don't want to mail-order, you can see if you can get hold of a cutting from a mature tree in a trade or something--then root it and it should be able to flower relatively quickly. Comments (241)I'm on the opposite side of the bay where summers are warmer. On average right now every day is in the 75-80f with lows around 60f. S.F. famously cool summers tend to be 65f-70f with lows all summer in the mid to upper 50's. Today,80f in Hayward,65f for a HIGH temp in San Francisco. S.F. does Mork have one advantage- winters are a frost free 10b. I get only 10a winters. Some years for me are frost free, but not most..so far. Houston summers are more like the Central Valley in Northern California..near 100 all deep summer until September. Stockton to Sacramento to Red Bluff have blazingly hot summers..but low humidity....See MoreWhich of your trees have fared the best/worst this winter?
Comments (81)Hi Laura, like you, all my mandarins did great this winter and some are pushing new growth. My Minneola is carrying three fruits and I wait for them to ripe. So so excite! My three meyer lemons all reacted the same way when I put them indoor. Lots of leaves drop but they started to push new leaves after january. Last summer, I bought a couple of trees from rock buck farm. A key lime (limequat), persian lime, valencia orange and navel orange. Limequat and the two oranges are not doing great at all. Lots of leaves drop and branches die back. I am not confident that I will be able to safe them. It’s still cold here so I can’t put them outside yet....See Morealtiptoentx
