Recommendations Needed: Vine to cover.

A neighborhood development cleared a bunch of brush on MY land (long story) and now I can see my neighbors. There is a wire fence there, some saplings, and a few large trees, but they will not fully block the neighbors like the brush before. I was thinking of planting a vine?!? Honeysuckle? Trumpet? Boston Ivy? But the voracity of those vines scares me...

This is in the unused area of the yard, far far away from the garden and the house. So, maybe I should not worry about a honeysuckle invasion? Or should I?

Plant a coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens). They are beautiful, hummingbirds love them and they do not run rampantly wild like some other honeysuckles do. I have had mine growing on the entry arbor to my garden for about 12 years, I guess, or maybe a bit longer and it has stayed where I want it to stay.

Here's one example of coral honeysuckle:

There are many varieties of Lonicera sempervirens. The one in the link is the one I have. I believe another one commonly found in stores here is "Gold Flame" and there's one with a more reddish-orange flower called "Major Wheeler".

At our house in southern OK, coral honeysuckle stays green almost year round, though its foliar color will change to a burgundy-tinted green after extremely cold weather. I don't know if that is true further north. I'm in zone 7b.

If you want something that stays evergreen in winter, you might want to plant some sort of shrub instead.

Nothing really looks like fig ivy except fig ivy. Other plants that grow similarly (cementing themselves to walls) like Virginia creeper & English ivy can also be invasive. The least invasive vine that clings like the ivys would be Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata) which also looks good with tropicals. Other good vines to go with your tropical look would be Blue Sky Flower (Thunbergia battiscombei), and Mexican Flame Vine (Pseudogynoxys chenopodioides) which is supposed to be well-mannered. If you want something "right now" try Cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit)--it's an annual. Another larger annual vine that would cover it fast would be Coral Vine (Antigonon leptopus.) Depending on where in California you are, these might provide cover most of the year, and both of these will reseed--the coral vine is more vigorous. I would avoid anything thorned or heavily scented around a BBQ. And definitely ask on the California forum for recommendations. Here is a link that might be useful: California Gardening

Morning glories are considered a pest by most around here. I would get a lot of nasty looks if I planted more but I agree it's a pretty vine. Now, the lablab recommendation might be worth a shot! However, I really don't want to put up a permanent trellis. Would the string setup that I was considering provide enough support?

Neither Pink Lemonade nor Goldflame are cultivars of Lonicera sempervirens. They are cultivars of a hybrid species, L. x heckrotti and will not remain evergreen. They do however offer great fragrance, which the native L. sempervirens does not. And they are not considered an invasive honeysuckle, although both are big, rampantly growing vines.

Quince makes a nice brushy bush. The birds love to perch in mine. A vitex tree left to grow like a bush would be beautiful in the summer. It wouldn't cover in the winter though. Whatever you do, I would make it with multiple types of plants. It will give you interest. I would plant for birds, bees and butterflies :)
