Best 36” gas range?

I have a Jenn Air 36” professional range. Since we have lived In our home we have been dealing with constant gas leaks. We’ve had the gas company/ repairmen come to our home at least 5 times to fix gas leaks within the oven. The last one was this past week. They found a leak in one of the pipes within the oven and fixed it. The smell of gas is better ( we could smell it with the oven off). But when I turn the oven on, there is still a smell of gas and we have to turn the fans on to diffuse the smell. Is it normal to smell gas when the oven is preheating? I had it set to 425. This is the first time using the oven since they fixed it. We’ve had this issue since we’ve moved into the house in 2012.

We moved into our home in 2012. The home was built by the previous owners in 2008. How long is a gas range supposed to last?

I’m at my wits end and sick of spending hundreds of dollars to “repair” this range. Any recommendations on a good reliable brand that won’t cost me an arm and a leg?

"10 years that you mentioned is pretty spot on for a range's lifespan these days."

I think for lower end consumer ranges perhaps. An all gas Wolf or Bluestar should last 30 or more.

I'm pretty sure it's GW, not google. It's another in the long list of glitches that GW/iVillage is apparently aware of and supposedly is working on. But there has been zero improvement since this started two weeks or so back. It does render the site pretty useless from an archive standpoint... all that valuable information lost. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. All I can figure is that the current 67 pages are available, but everything else is gone unless they get it fixed. I had bookmarked a number of pages for reference and can't access half or more of them. At least we all still have each other to answer questions, but it means starting over again every time a question is asked.

We have had the 36" Blue Star range (model RCS36SB) for about 5 years and would not recommend it. The knobs get very warm and we have had problems with the convection fan as well as ignition (gas would build up in the oven while it failed to ignite), both problems required multiple service visits The latest problem, the oven knob broke off and Bluestar said they no longer manufacture the part. Bluestar said they changed from a mechanical thermostat to an electronic thermostat and the ”upgrade” would cost $350 to purchase, not including installation (total cost estimated at least $500). I assume they redeigned the oven knob/thermostat because they had so many problems with the knob, convection and ignition. Even though it was under warranty and the knob broke due to faulty design, the service manager refused to provide a replacement part. I guess you can expect problems to occur with any appliance, but I do not expect them to provide such poor service, especially when they know it broke due to their own design flaw. It takes them days to follow up on service questions. Best to stay away from Blue Star.

Mid range is Cafe, Kitchenaid, Bosch, Fisher Paykel. You're talking low end import junk crapola. Even a decent 30” mid range is more than your budget.

What kind of cooking do you do? How often? What are your needs? How important is cooking performance vs cost? What service options are available locally? What do you have for a hood currently and what are options for a better hood if needed?

Your current range is rather low end (IMO) so not too surprised by your problems.

In general I'd say a 36" Bluestar RNB w/ 12" griddle is the best (we are putting a 48" w/ 24" griddle in our new house).

A Bluestar RCS (open burner) is a less expensive option but has less powerful burners and no griddle.

The main reason to get a Bluestar is the open star shaped burners. Aside from that then a 36" Wolf w/ 12" griddle would be a good choice. Better griddle than Bluestar and potentially with more locally available service depending on where you live.

Any of these will be much more reliable and give you much greater cooking performance than what you currently have.

I cook at least 5 times a week, mostly the stovetop, but I’ve just gotten into baking, so I’m using the oven more often. I was always under the impression that Jenn Air was a top brand, but never did any research on it, just second hand from my friends. That being said, I’m definitely going to be doing some reading up on this Bluestar brand. I’d never heard of it before.

that is definitely too short of a lifespan. don't know much about jenn air in terms of quality. I would think though that the repair tech would have verified that things are functioning correctly. i do not smell gas fron my Monogram range at all normally although can understand if you have a good nose you might smell it for a brief moment as the burners are igniting.

Yeah, not having owned a gas range before, I thought it was normal to smell gas. Now I know better. We used the oven for the first time since it was fixed earlier this week and the smell was overwhelming. I just want to purchase a reliable range.

10 years that you mentioned is pretty spot on for a range's lifespan these days. No worries about replacing it, it's time. The recs posted above are good, but to repeat, the Bluestar has about the most most powerful cooktop on the market, and will have many more btus than your Jenn-Aire. What is your hood exhaust set-up? How many cfms does your hood have?

friedajune, those are good questions and I don’t know the answer to that. I’m not looking for a super high end range or something that requires high output. But I also don’t want something that is not going to function after 5 years, which coincidentally is when the warranty ended. Right around the time we began to have issues with it.

Definitely look at the Bluestar RCS. It's a fantastic range. It doesn't have the higher output burners that the RNB does but it puts out plenty of heat to sear, sauté and stir fry excellently. I've had mine for 3 years and I love it. There are no electronics that can fail, it's easy to clean and the oven roasts and broils wonderfully. It also costs over $2K less than the RNB.

We don't use a griddle pretty much ever, so the lack of griddle is not an issue for us. However if it is for you, then look at the RNB.
