Mudroom doors, 7ft or 8 ft.
Comments (7)I agree, match the front door by having a transom. The interior doors to our main floor bedrooms, hall bath, living room and laundry/mud room all have antique glass transoms over them. The door from the garage to the laundry/mud room and the closet in that room do not have transoms over them. Obviously, I don't have a problem with having that difference. Do you have any doorways off the front door entry? Do they have transoms? If not, wouldn't it be similar to the situation with the mudroom?...See More8ft interior doors or 6' 8' standard doors?
Comments (16)you will save quite a bit of money from changing from 10' plates to 9'. framing costs lower, drywall costs lower, less siding, etc. Not to mention save money on heating and cooling. PLus this thread mentions possible design issues with it and added costs associated with it. Our current design uses 9' plates in general, but the entry and dining bump up to 10' plates. we are using an 8' full glass front door. the living space is 9' plates with a 10' tray ceiling built into the trusses. kitchen is also 9' and we are using 42" high cabinets. in the kitchen consider indirect uplighting/cove lighting as a main source of light. Ironically most people load kitchens with cans. Cans are one of the worst lighting sources for a kitchen since it cast shadows on the work surface since you are blocking the light. Undercabinet lighting set to the front edge of the upper and indirect uploading will provide overall better lighting of the space. not having soffits will allow lighting above your cabinets....See MoreIs anyone doing 8 ft doors with a 9 ft ceiling?
Comments (6)Our house has 9' ceilings -- 9-1/2' in some areas -- and we have standard height (6'-8") doors. It looks just fine and the proportion is good. I don't think it would have been a design improvement, and might have looked pretentious, if we had gone for taller doors. I think of over-size doors as most appropriate for commercial/institutional structures and for $20 million penthouses in New York. I know others on these forums have other views, but I don't think tall doors are necessarily an aesthetic improvement, particularly with ceilings that aren't much taller than standard. Standard doors with taller ceilings will help accentuate the airiness, while taller doors will fight against that. Save yourself some money and stick with standard height doors. It's a good design choice and you won't regret it....See MoreWhat size cabinets with 8 ft. ceiling?
Comments (12)ethancremepie - My apologies for the delay in responding. Yes to the 36 with 6" molding - here are the same in the pantry. I haven't found the 3" of extra space to be missed and like the richness of the taller crown. Regarding how far out the hood is, we pulled forward the lower cabinets 6" (for the 30" countertops), and the cooktop cabinets and cooktop, 9". The upper cabinets are 18" deep, and the hood itself is at about 31.5, plus then the wood hood surround. 64" worked for us - we have a custom SS surround, so that there's a large capture areas. You can sort of see it from here: I know what you mean about the 8' ceilings! I used the bold tile to draw the eye away - but I'm sure there are plenty more tricks which would work. Have you posted your layout? Please post a link if it's still a work in progress. This forum is phenomenol! Best, oldbat2be...See MoreHolly Nicole
