Yes, sapsuckers consume sap and possibly some of the cambium layer. Sap does contain complex sugars and amino acids which is nutritious for birds. Hummingbirds also visit the wells created by sapsuckers in early spring before flowers are readily available...and they consume the sap as well. Healthy trees can survive these repeated attacks by sapsuckers, so your tree should be just fine.

I've also heard that the sap attract insects, and the YBSSs like to eat them too. Many of my trees have holes all over them.

NOT so...I'd had many healthy new trees I've grown from seeds killed to the ground ...before I went my rounds and look for damages.

Many take to the gun to protect their trees...I havn't done so but never like them to have around, still not sure why these are protected...is it the looks?
