Making an own root standard ?

I have seen advice on how to do a grafted standard but wonder if it could work to just use an own root plant. I'd think that you could take an upright grower, remove all lower branches, and tie the main cane to a stake to keep it vertical. Then continue to remove all growth you don't want, and prune the top growth so it is branchy. I have an own root Koko Loco plant that looks like a standard without me doing anything to it. i.e. it's a 3' one cane wonder with a bushy top. Looks pretty good. Has anyone tried this? I'd especially like a weeping standard but those that weep are not necessarily going to be as easy to develop a central upright cane.
