like to change exterior of 70s house - ideas?
Comments (60)Of all the renditions, I like jterrilynn's last one best. It doesn't fight the original 70s contemporary style -- and perhaps is the least expensive option too. One could quibble over the choice of colors, but I think the bicolor scheme with the top color carried over to the pergola & support columns, and pergola top being at the same level, size, & color as with the center trim band are terrific. It's balanced, it's clean lined, it's attractive. The wider trim around the squarish windows and on the sides works really well. I love jterrilynn's placement of the address numbers -- so simple and so effective. Great job, jterrilynn....See MoreNew Ranch! BUT ugly front porch awning.....exterior paint and col
Comments (34)Congrats on your new home! It will be charming. I think the awning spoils the lines of the house, and doesn't let you see the interesting angles of the brickwork. I would take it down. However, if you think it is really of benefit and you want to keep it, I would paint it the same color as the siding OR the same color as the roof. I would also paint the brown wood the siding color - it makes the front windows feel like they are sitting in a hole, and doesn't really do anything special for the house. I would also love to see you take out those bushes in front of the porch. They really date the house, and exposing that brick and stone would give the front porch more substance. A wider, curved bed in front of that with low plantings would be nice, and then perhaps a larger evergreen on the left corner of the porch. A second curved out bed in front of the left half of the house, perhaps a birdbath in the middle of the bed, and then a small tree of some kind on the left outside corner of the house, but a bit away and in the final curved planting area out even a bit more into the yard there. The ironwork is also a dated look, but I don't know if you want to replace that right now. Personally, I might take out the pieces in between the vertical posts, and open up the front porch even more. I think I would leave it white, like the rest of the trim on the house. Finally, I would think about a strong accent color for the front door. A rich navy would be very pretty, and a good transition between the cool grey tones in the roof and the warmer yellows and oranges of the brick and siding....See MoreNeed help with exterior of house!!
Comments (26)Some visual ways to call attention to the home side on the right: Front garden emphasizes home side, pulling the eye away from double garage. Light colored driveway echoes brick. Hardscaping: walkway is wider and puts emphasize on house entrance not garage. The paving stone echoes the brick: This is pricey: Deep beds extend the house side beautifully. There's a walkway near the garage but the wide pathway emphasizes the home side. More budget friendly would be the skim coat your current walkway in light tan and frame it with bricks that match your bricks--a version of this pathway. This would widen the walkway. Paver walkway that echoes stone:...See More50s Ranch House exterior paint help!
Comments (6)thank you Beth! I definitely had a laugh at your "Beige really?" comment! We tend toward warm neutrals, and initially we'd thought to just paint it a different beige with undertones that go with the yard better (it's definitely yellow-y at the moment), before deciding to go lighter. We aren't big fans of grey. I quite like the second photo, but again we run into a situation where a house two doors down already did the white/wood/black trim route, so I'll have to think on how to make it stand apart. The color scheme you worked up for the inspo photo is awesome! I think I'll try to get samples of Divine White and Jasper Stone and see how it looks :) The darker gutters are also an interesting idea - I didn't even think of that! Thank you too chloebud! I'm adding Swiss Coffee to the list too! :) I really appreciate everyone's help! I'm awful at visualizing color schemes so it's super helpful to see all the ideas!!!...See More- 6 years ago
