April showers-------of books

I had an attack of nostalgia and pulled out my old copy of Gladys Taber's "Stillmeadow" journal. It is one of a series. I love her descriptions of the 1690 farmhouse she and her family bought and restored in New England. She wrote this ca. 1948, when America was just recovering from WW II. She and her family raised Cocker Spaniels, did endless "canning" with a pressure cooker, and chopped firewood for their old-fashioned stove. They gave up life in New York city and seemed to thrive on blizzards, tornados, candlelight, and meals made from their own garden vegetables.

Someone has recommended the work of Louise Penny. Has anyone here read her books? Do I have to read them in order?
