Hoop house in zone 5b/6. Do I need double wall?
Comments (4)I'm in 5b and have a double wall. The light is an issue. Cole crops don't do well. broccoli gets leggy. I'm amazed that you both "grow" things durring the winter. I had no experience before building mine and the perception was it is impossible to grow stuff through the winter without heat. So i built mine with 2 layers. JRSLICK... when you say "Grew" crops all winter, do you really mean they grew or are you just harvesting plants that grew earlier? I can actually grow lettuce, beets, peas, and spinnach but there is a period in January where things just stop. I have no heat in my GH. I find that i can start most plants in march. I've learned that some, like pepers, will wait until may to germinate and i really will need more heat to do well with those. Needing the heat, i see no alternative to going with 2 layers. To me the double wall alone isn't enough to get the warmth i need. I've added a 1500 gallon fish tank to help moderate the temps and that seems to have helped some: I only had one day of freezing this winter even with the -18F temps we had. I wish someone would make tefzel (98% light transmission) sheets in greenhouse widths... and at affordable prices....See MoreHow do I protect my Needle Palm(R. Hystrix) in zone 5b
Comments (27)Its a very nice needle palm! I think its a great size for $2 dollars so although it may be a little small, it was worth the price. I havent had luck with asking home depot to ship certain plants. I actually went to a home depot away from my location and asked if they could ship a plant to my location, but they said they couldnt and all of their plant shipments are random for the most part. -Alex...See MoreWhen Should I Fertilize and What Should I Use (Zone 5b)
Comments (7)I don't think you have a lawn problem at all. Basically crappy genetic stock bowing out to the conditions. It'll likely come back fine this fall. How you manage the fall season is largely dependent on what is the predominant grass type in your blend. If just a cool season mix, treat it as such and take an average. So between high input KBG to as low as fine fescue, fertilize somewhere in between. You have to cater your routine to what you have. Sounds like you are wanting more. That requires better genetic stock or going over the top with what you have in defiance of nature--that will require more pesticide use and cultural practices like core aeration....See MoreI have no clue what to do for this orchid
Comments (5)Sorry to be the one to tell you, the leaves may still look good but we all recognize that the 2 remaining roots are dead. Dry crunchy & brittle roots are dead. You could just twist them off w/ your fingers. Pls feel the base of the plant, w/ a light squeeze btwn your fingers. If soft & mushy it's already rotted & should be tossed. If still firm there's a MINOR chance it might survive. But yes, you've got some reading to do if you wish to do better next time....See MoreJulia Kay
