Flooring Design Dilemma living room

Tongue and Groove Walls VS Flooring

I have two walls in my home that are tongue and groove along with the ceiling in the living room. Right now i have old laminate flooring and old smelly carpet throughout. i plan to paint and redo the kitchen, but I don't know which flooring to choose!!

I find that a lot of wood going on maybe paint some of it , get rid of it altogether in the kitchen. Then making a floor decision will be a lot easier. That kitchen is really crying for a redo make sure you get a KD to make the most of the space you have, they can probably help with flooring decision too

Dry lay some of the flooring each way and see what looks best to you. However, my recommendation would be to run the planks in the direction of the longest wall.

Solid wood paneling is a classic, very valuable and cannot be replaced. I'd do something to keep that. I agree that the original aesthetic of the wood was to add warmth with all the natural hard materials like stone, slate, iron, etc. Depends on how much of a purist you want to be with the aesthetic. The original design is flexible as to what colors and stains would work. You could paint too. The only real crime would be to tear out something that is as valuable as real wood paneling. It was even expensive back in the day when it was installed. It has value because it is high quality and beautiful. I would seek to do something that retains the pluses. If you want to maintain your house as an homage to the middle of the last century, then obviously "restore" rather than "redo." Oh, and just a ponder, is that two story fireplace material original? Or was it originally brick too? Love your house BTW! Very elegant.

Before ditching the sheet rock, better check local codes. Sheet rock is simply the least expensive and best choice for fire proofing buildings and is often required by code.

We are building our home. We have very high catherdral ceilings in our "great room" which is our kitchen/dining/living. Our plan was to have wood flooring, grey walls, white tongue and groove ceiling and white kitchen cabinets. BUT now that we have started putting up the tongue and groove everyone is saying do not paint, just clear coat it. What to do? I personally feel like it will be too much wood with the ceiling and the floor. And secondly i have no clue what wood color the floor should be or what color to paint walls??

phuninthesun, im really looking at anything at this point. and Patricia i know it needs it horribly bad. being a young homeowner poses a bit of a financial issue though too

You have a lot of great woodwork to work with!!

To prevent competing with the wood you already have in your space, consider a square or hexagonal tile at least for the kitchen and dining area. The living room could eventually work well with a stained concrete (if it's ground floor) with a large area rug to keep the space warm and comfortable but a little more sanitary and low maintenance! The one no-no would be wood-look tile.

This tile palette would be a great way to start to update your space with a little more contemporary feel :

Slate tile would pull some of the tones of the millwork for a cohesive and rustic look considering the majority of finishes you currently have:
