Chenille Bedspreads
Comments (13)Peacock designs were so popular the highway out of Dalton became known as Peacock Alley...lol Early handcrafted prices were $2.50 per spread and later in the mills women worked for minimum wage which was 32 cents per hour. Of course the first millionaire in chenille manufacture/marketing was a man...ain't it always the way? Just found it fascinating that the whole carpet industry developed from one woman's needle and thread around the turn of the last century... I remember my parent's first newly-built house in the late forties was carpeted over hardwood floors. It wasn't until the mid-sixties when DH & I bought our own first house and ripped out the gold 'sculptured' carpets that Mom realized bare could be beautiful. lol Here is a link that might be useful: Chenille...See Morewould love to hem my own pants
Comments (25)Hi oil painter, Do you figure that your sewing machine would jump up and down and scream if a man were to touch it? Maybe it's time for hubs to think about learning to sew so that he can sew his own seams. You could suggest that it sure would be a helpful skill for him to have following your death. If that doesn't make an impression, or move him ... ... suggest that it would be an equally useful skill following a divorce. Otherwise ... teach him how to make and install pie crust and tell him that he must put the pie crusts together (or take on another boring job that's usually considered female's work) if he wants you to do favours for him. Especially if you're a work-outside-the-home (i.e. WOTH as contrasted to a SAH) Mom. Since hemming pants are often cosidered females' work, don't be surprised if he looks you in the eye and claims that you're just being lazy and trying to fob off some of "your jobs" on others. I've been patching jeans, overalls, coveralls, a work jacket and a shirt or two around here, by both machine and hand, in recent months, as gardening is a bit rough on pants. It gets more complicated when one has to split leg-seams in order to access the holey knees. And that's doubled in spades when both seams are of the double orange threaded kind: my machine has only one needle. I did manage to sew one back pocket to the seat, rather than just attaching the patch to the original pocket material flap, a while ago ... decided that I didn't want to operate with a shallow pocket, so pulled that seam! Hi colorcrazy, When I looked at your fifth instruction, I saw that you wanted to mark the leg a couple of inches below the new fold. Then at 6 you say to cut at the new fold ... didn't you mean to cut at the place that you'd just said to make the mark, a couple of inches lower? ___________________ By the way, I've become quite friendly with a neighbour couple of retired farmers where the wife has counselled me on my sewing machine difficulties ... and they gave me a new pair of overalls at their family party on Christmas eve. I have three or four pairs of jeans in various stages of repair here, which is one of my major winter projects ... ... plus I got enough end of denim at the fabric store to make a new pair, I think ... ... so it looks as though I won't be able to die for three or four years, till I get some of them worn out! Good wishes for a fine New Year ... at the end of which you can say that you've got all of the loose ends of your projects all sewn up. ole joyful...See Moreeither my dream or a nightmare
Comments (24)I try to avoid buying upholstery online-it's wise to try it first. I also tend to buy vintage, either in my area, so then I can see it, or from allover, if it's something smaller and shipping costs are not prohibitive. It's usually cheaper, well made, and just plainly more interesting, on many levels-as an experience, since every purchase becomes a small story of its own, and for the collected unique look, that reflects how life usually is, and thus is more authentic I'd say. I did use several internet sites though for smaller furniture when trying it out was less important, thus less chance of having to return it.. Except for a folding bed-chair..Overstock, glowing reviews, great service-was pleased with it. Was used by many guests for sleepovers. Did use Wayfair but not for furniture..great service, usually good return policy(was able to return a mirror after a year (was beautiful; but our remodel took too long, and things changed in the middle). The rules change though -the return policy and shipping costs will depend on a product. Did use OneKingsLane for a side table and (recently) an ottoman. Did use West Elm for a daybed(frame only)-but waited for months for it to go on huge sale to pay only third of the initial price(and right I was lol) Did use Ballard Designs for an etagere, recently. Did use Anthropologie for cheaper nightstands and a chest(usually their prices are too steep for me) . Did use Palecek for an ottoman. Did use Etsy (vintage and handmade) for couple ottomans and lots of lighting. Did use eBay for lighting. I was mostly pleased with the service of all these stores. I do read reviews very attentively, if there are any. I'd also try to go to estate sales in your area, check Craigslist..check online estate sales site Everything But The House that covers more and more areas and is a source of great finds..check Chairish ( new and vintage by individual sellers)-you can limit the results to your area, plus-minus. Don't be in a hurry, and start with a great mattress that you've tried first..unless you have it already:)...See MoreHelp me decorate my bedroom (global/bohemian)
Comments (51)Update now that curtains are hung. I LOVE being able to have some natural light while maintaining some privacy. I couldn’t order that chandelier earlier because I was heading out of town, and then the price jumped. So I’ve got my eye on it and I’ll snag it as soon as the price goes down again. I also am looking for the right duvet cover. Had held off on ordering because I was going out of town, but yesterday I found this creamy one with arrows on it. Kind of cute. Will either go this route or a solid white. The grey paint is looking more and more drab. Someone made the suggestion that a crisper white will help make the other colors pop. Something to think about I guess....See Morepudgeder
