Aloe propagation

So I have a really pretty variegated aloe that I broke a leaf off of at the base of the stem. Has anyone had any luck rooting an aloe from just a leaf? It'd be sweet if I could! It's regular name is 'climbing aloe' it's an alabaster and lime green variegation. Thank you!

I agree with mesembs, but there's nothing wrong with giving it a try. Since the leaf will die if you don't do anything, what have you got to lose?

I'd love to see a picture of your plant. It sounds really pretty.

According to current knowledge, aloes cannot be propagated from a single leaf.

You guys got me excited about Aloes and blooms, so I went out to the green house, just a small building, to see if anything was in bloom..Voila, an Aloe, (I've had it over 4 yrs) so who knows its age, and some type of Kalanchoe. Please excuse the gh, it's a mess..I'd have cleaned today, but there's so much mud outside, running in and out is a big mess! Is Medusa a species? Is that the succulent that grows long stems? I think it might be a Euphorbia? Anyway, here's what I found today.. Yippee!! lol Anyone know what type of Aloe? Thanks, and again, please excuse the gh..spring will soon be here..thankfully, Toni

Here's a nice Question I just thought of, can these Aloes be propagated by leaf cuttings or the branches, whatever their called ? Now I know they pup but are generous enough to produce with leaf cuttings , I hope someone says YES!!! Greg

Dear Baci, I guess it's a matter of semantics. Thanks to another GWer, I saw your pics. Yep, those are pups, but you've also got a bit of stem on the end of the leaf. This allowed the pups to grow. My idea of a leaf cutting is just that - a leaf with no stem tissue on it. As you probably know, you can grow plants from the Aloe's relatives, Haworthias and Gasterias, from true leaf cuttings - even an 1" cutting from the end of a leaf is enough. I've not grown Aloes as you have, but that's an interesting way to do it. I'd just have to be careful to ensure there is stem tissue there so the pups will propagate.

I totally understand @J Garrett, but @KarenS, NYC is so right. The potassium in bananas aids growth, just not in bananaform 😂😂 there are loads of these misinfirmations on the web. We have such a great saying in Dutch that sadly does not translate to english but let's just say that potassium (and other beneficial elements for plants) come in many forms and not all forms work for your plant. This video is informational and funny, tackling all these "hacks" https://youtu.be/hTeEfVODzPc Just stick it in well airated, well draining soil leave it dry and give it a very gentle tug every now and then to check for roots (it wont come up if it's starting to root).

Been tried thousands of times... not heard of success story yet... though some aloes are hybridized with haworthias or gasterias and those do have some ability to regrow from leaves.

Ooooh - that plant is a beauty!

Good luck with the leaf. Hope for the best, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Right?

Oh totally, I'm sure it's a shot in the dark lol. But why not. I can join the long list of failures lol

This guy's pretty slow growing. He pushed a pup up after 6 months (it had a pup below soil line when I bought it). I wish it pupped frequently!
