Succumbing to a spring cold spell, or something else?

I believe a rose that came through winter with an abundant number of healthy, green canes...the hope of all northern rose gardeners....then suddenly starts to show blackening canes when cold spells occur is not succumbing to those frigid periods. Those now blackening canes were doomed, already dead, winter killed, but just hadn't progressed to blackening yet. The warming spring weather accelerates the decay of dead cane cells, manifested by suddenly blackening canes. These canes were kept live looking by the cold winter temperatures. Do you agree?
