advice; picture arrangement

I have a wall that is 23’ long with a linear fireplace on one wall that I’m building vignettes of interest. I have the left end ‘done’ and now I’m working on options for the right. The dilemma here is what size art work to go above a sideboard. I have three options to consider; I am open to suggestions about if the largest piece which is fairly unique (Framed Rorschach originals) may be too tall height wise), the other two pieces are about the same size but the orientation is landscape for the reproduction print of Times Square/building picture, and the abstract Australian Aboriginal piece is an original that I made myself. I have the opposing wall that is a blank slate too that I could put the art on, or completely different pieces (I have a fairly interesting concept to run what is essentially a 12 foot long x 3” tall thin piece of wood painted bright red (based on a famous piece from MOMA) that sort of looks like a shelf but is “art”. Opinions welcome. (Ignore the pink towel on the chair for the dog :-), that won’t stay).

Well I finally hung the pictures after worrying about it for weeks too long. Now I can just enjoy them. I haven’t yet done the wall opposite the TV but plan to do that over the summer. Thanks everyone who gave me advice, much appreciated.

I can't make out the last pic even when I blow it up...........

I'm thinking the last option you listed - bright red shelf? would be incredibly interesting and unexpected.

Love your couch! And the chair with match pillows is gorgeous! I think the Time Square piece (which is portrait not landscape) is your best bet as like you said the first is too big, and I think the third is too small. I will also add that your sideboard doesn't really match the style of the rest of the room, but I understand if your not open to changing it! Should you want artwork opposite the fireplace then you could look for something in the 40x16in range as your couch is very long.

Get some rolls of paper, or big pieces of cardboard and try out different sizes and arrangements of pieces you have or are thinking of getting. Tape it up and see what it looks like for balance. Keeping the art - whether it's a single piece or a cluster of small ones - visually about the same size (give or take a few inches) as the furniture or furniture plus accessories. The common mistakes are: Art work too small for size of space or furniture, looks timid and lost Art hung too high and looks "floaty" Art hung too far apart in a cluster, Looks skimpy. Incoherent frame or art choices in a cluster ... this one is hard to explain, but there should be a commonality that the viewer can spot in the pieces. Similar subjects with disparate frames, similar framing unifying disparate subjects, colors across the cluster. Sometimes it the "odd man out" - one picture is just not helping support the group.

Looking at your other thread, why not put the dining room where they have the big sectional? It is adjacent to the kitchen and you have the kitchen table nearby for seating kids so the adults can have the big table. Then you can trick out the other space for a great TV/family room.

Since the frames and 2 art pieces are the same size I would forgo the "cool arrangement" and stick with uniformity. Generally the fun arrangements are used, out of necessity, when all the frames are a different size. I would do all 4 frames stacked on one wall and then the other two art pieces on another, stacked or side-by-side depending on the wall size and art in proportion to the wall.

I think tv would be too high over that fireplace unless mantle is lowered. Maybe do tv on a cabinet on same wall as pictuededEd. Right now ut seems odd on wall as is with cabinets so much lower. i like how furniture is currently arranged.

Agree, I like the ink blot as well. I’d probably skip the MOMA piece, though.

This is the aboriginal inspired piece unframed. The pic is about 18 x 23” and then add about 3 or 4 inches around for the mat and frame. I have two of them (identical; the framer made a small error on the first one and insisted on re-doing one) and was considering what they would look like hung together to create the visual repetition one over the other. That would give approximate height a bit smaller than the jumbo ink blots... who knew having good art would be so difficult to arrange.

That is beautiful -

Have you considered grouping all your good art on that wall even around the sides of the desk? Funk it up here.

Then simply run the long red horizontal piece over the sofa?

I am suggesting you treat your "good art" as if you were doing an installation in an art gallery - not decorating your room.

I would rather look at the Rorschach repeatedly,so that wins. Can the last pieces find a home in the room,too? Your MOMA idea sounds intriguing. Hope you post if you do it.

I know you asked for advice about art, but your drapery panels are too pinkish and not full enough and not hung high enough to complement the stunning style of your room. Just a suggestion.

I see what you mean Beverly but in the other shot they don't appear pink at all.....

I would like to see the rod go to the corners so that additional panels can be added to add more drama and fullness. Right now they look skimpy to me.

The curtains are silver grey in person. The width of the rod isn’t supposed to go to the opposing walls and there isn’t room to extend the curtains anyway. The curtains aren’t the permanent ones but they don’t bother me at the moment as the function fine. Eventually I will buy custom wool ones.

Back to the art- thanks everyone for the consultation. Once I decide I will post a follow up photo.

cool software - can you try this: remove the cityscape and put it on the wall to the left of the curtain (or not) - hang one aboriginal art to the left of the center square piece horizontally and the other one to the right vertically. Place each one so that the center of each hangs over the corners of the desk - so further apart than you have it now.......

Are you set on all 4 pieces in that space? I still prefer the largest alone above the buffet and would likely find two smaller images for the side near fireplace. Or have those two pieces matted & framed smaller because,imo, they definitely belong in that room.

Tim, beautiful space! Less symmetrical but what about the two aboriginal inspired pieces stacked on the left and the larger piece next to them on the same plane but not so far apart from each other that they over-span the console. It may be too wide but worth a shot. If not, I think I like the larger piece on its own.

My wife is not liking the ink blots for the room so I may keep her ha and move it to a guest bedroom. Then perhaps tha aboriginal art stays. Question then is if the city sketch should be elsewhere or in a trio.

Yes but no, I thought the larger piece would be as tall as the two stacked pieces and the 3 elements would make more of a rectangular shape. I vote for the larger piece on its own then.

I don't know if all the pieces are in their final frames/mats (or if you wanted to re-mat) but this is what I meant (both sides, same height).

This is an option and about as close as I could get. I can’t slide them over to the right more. They are all professionally matted and mounted so I don’t want to pay for that all over again.

Maybe others will chime in but I'm not loving grouping them all together like that. It seems off balance and I think it diminishes the artwork; especially since each of them are able to stand on their own.

I think all four is too much, and the sizes don't work well together. I would look for ways to incorporate them in other rooms so you can still enjoy but not clutter this one wall!

Finally I made a decision about the artwork over the couch - I found an incredible artist named Eva from Tsunami Glassworks who made these hand blown glass cells that individually mount on the wall. It is much more stunning in person than the poor lighting I have in these photos. They are a mixture of mat black, glass black, pearlized grey, and burgundy that glisten in the room and are gorgeous.
