Removing our "retaining wall"... I use the term lightly
Comments (16)Yardvaark -- nice: "wall made by dump truck" ;-) Actually, after looking at that, I can see the issues w/OPs wall. It does look more like rock piles than a structure. I guess I thought it was supposed to have a rough look, like tumbling stones...but I can see how that just comes across as sloppy. deviant -- all those little rocks in the gap are amazing! Amazing the way that they all cozy together so neatly. catkim -- I agree, another level to the wall would make is have greater visual impact. lindsroc -- good luck, I think the plan that you linked will work out whether or not you keep the retaining wall. I, personally, prefer a level yard; your yard seems like it would have a fairly gentle grade though, which would be easy to live with. I do think your wall has potential. However, I have not a clue how much it would cost to make it beautiful or if it's in your budget. If lindsroc leaves the wall as is, would it help to plant some type of overhanging plants along the wall, to sort of drape over it? Or would that just be tacky? ;-)...See Moreretaining wall and/or screen
Comments (8)"... birch in the middle with the thuja in the back ... Curious why I've never seen this." Because in 25' or 30' of spatial depth, there isn't room. Birch get large and eventually would produce enough shade on the front side (the side you look at) of the Thuja that it could not maintain its foliage. It would not be pretty. Funny that ... "evergreen" always means always green. It doesn't mean "non-skinny," no matter the context. "The landscaper sort of grunted and said birches don't like the clay soil here..." He is probably short on a source at the moment. Forgive the general dislike of written descriptions without pictures. Usually, they are woefully inadequate and often the pictures make evident features or conditions that were thought unimportant by the author. Your second attempt isn't too bad, but a picture would make what you're trying to describe, clear and obvious, and greatly improve your chances of getting better help. Without a picture, I'd be inclined to say go with the Thuja idea. With a picture, I might offer an entirely different suggestion. Pictures spur thought....See Moredry stacked stone on front of house and retaining wall?
Comments (3)I thought about the dry stack for our rock work, but I was told by multiple sources that it can cost almost twice as much because of the amount of materials and labor. I love how it looks, though. If I were you, I would get an estimate both ways for the whole project and go with the dry stack if you feel it's affordable. I don't know about your retaining wall. It sounds to me like it would be better to have the rock work all the same, but it might depend on how it's positioned, how far it is from the house, etc....See MoreRetaining Wall Help
Comments (1)You need to be more specific about what it is you are wanting to do because your picture scares me. Railroad ties rot and your chimney does not look like it is attached to the ground. Hard to reach from the road? Does that mean hard for construction crews and materials to reach the lake side cliff?...See MoreCharles Earl Landscape Architecture LLC
