Tree ID from seed pod and how to grow it.

In the San Diego area today, I picked up two seed pods off the ground under a very attractive tree that had bunches of the pods, which were hanging like grapes. I didn't think to get a picture of the foliage, but I would like to know what sort of tree it could have been and what I would need to do to have hopes of getting the seeds to sprout. Even I can't get an ID for the tree, I would love to be able to grow one, in spite of its being obvious that this is a "messy" tree that will require a lot of sweeping underneath it in the seed season.

Each pod seems to have three sections, so distinct that you can imagine the fat seeds that must be inside. They are not shiny, but not fuzzy, either, and their colors are a medium green and brown, sort of lighter, yet more dusky than in the picture. Their ends are pointed, both in an elongated way where they were attached to the tree, and with a briefer point at the bottom. Any help is much appreciated.
