Are you planting more or less this year?
Comments (21)We are aiming to be more self sufficiant too. Mersiepoo, have you looked into mangle beets for fodder? Misjay2u, my mother used to wash turnip greens in the washing machine. I can induce my guys to eat cooked "greens" at all. I have to sneak them into a salad. Mitch, is it nearby or will you have to drive a while to take care of it? If no one is going to be there to weed it maybe you could try sheet composting (lasagna gardening) or something similar to keep the work to a minimum. If I'm not out there every day, things tend to get out of hand for me quickly. I have two large vegetable gardens. One is 1/3 of an acre and a new, unused one that is bit smaller. I'm going to grow a lot of chicken feed this year in the big one near the road, hoping that will keep the deer and resident groundhogs away. They usually stay in the back of the property. The squirrels and wild birds will be a problem. I am slowly working towards covering the whole 1/3 acre garden with cardboard and old hay/straw/leaves. I'll till between the rows in what is left and also in the other one, with the tractor, so things will be planted very far apart in there. Last year my garden was just wild with weeds taking over everywhere. I'm going to keep them out this year!! In addition, I'm going to grow luffahs and decorative gourds on the deck railing this year. I want the luffahs to go with my soap. I'm also hoping for a crop of apples for the chickens in the winter. This year the racoons are not going to steal them all! I need a big outdoor dog. I WANT a Great Pyranees - can't afford one yet. Do you think my 14 year old shi tzu/bichon could be induced to sleep out under the apple tree this fall? Hmmmm...probably not. How do you keep a big farm dog out of the vegetable garden?...See MoreQeustions on old aloe plants
Comments (2)They might be five to ten years old, depending on previous conditions. They look like they were grown in low light/indooors, and the thin etiolated stems took a downward turn because they were unable to withstand gravity while supporting the mass of the head. They need beheading badly to give them new life ;) Chop about about 2-4 inches below the lowest leaf, or close to the transition from bark tan stem to green growing stem. It is not required, but dusting with cinnamon as an anti-fungal, or rooting powder if you have it. Let cuts dry for a week in dry air. Plant in a dry, porous mix that is at least 75% inorganic materials in the 1/8 to 3/8 inch range like pumice, perlite, gravel, etc. No peat, no sand, no problems. Do not water for several more weeks to let roots start to form. You may notice a lower leaf or two resorbed/recycled during that process. It may sound scary, but chopping is easy to do, and re-rooting is normally successful. Be very cautious with watering until the cutting is well-established. I think I would a month or two before chopping because the plant will be entering a prime growing season, and rooting will start quickly. Brad...See MoreLarge old Jade Plant. Need expert advice.
Comments (4)Yes, I'm sure we can supply help so please post a pic so that we can do this easier for you. In the meantime, please don't waste any money on buying any mix labelled as 'cactus & succulent mix'. You are correct, it does come by another name, but it's a name I prefer not too type if you get my drift! Do a search on here for 'jade soil' or similar, lots of info will come up...but we do need a pic of the whole plant plus it's 'soil'. Comments (10)Thanks Helen. I checked it and found out another post by someone. After reading it, I think I'd be good to go in the Spring to behead her! Her, the plant. :P https://getbusygardening.com/aloe-vera-plant-care/ The section under Propagating Aloe Vera Plants says, "If your aloe vera plant has grown huge and has a long stem at the bottom (and you’re feeling brave), you could try propagating the whole thing from one large stem cutting (this is how I ended up with two humongous aloe vera plants!)." Nik, the big one was repotted to a larger pot about a year and a half ago. I had kept half of the dirt in and added new dirt. I didn't want to startle it, but maybe I'm completely wrong. Maybe I'll give it 100% new dirt soon, but then again it's winter here. We actually just had our first snowfall today, and a lot of snow. Wasn't sticking though! I wish the leaves got fat! I give it a little bit of this for food and hasn't died yet! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JIRKYJ2/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Great information to help me open my eyes more! I do have two LED grow lights w/ full spectrum.... Thoughts?...See MoreAndrea Sprague
