Bernhardt vs. Thomasville for leather.
Comments (20)I'm sure the sofa is gone now and you either got it or didn't, but bonded leather is pretty easy to distinguish by looking and feeling it. It is stiffer and will have you questioning whether it is leather or vinyl. I have only seen bonded in black or dark brown. I wouldn't expect Thomasville to use bonded leather -- sounds like it was a good buy if the reclining mechanisms were in good shape -- but next time you have a question, you are more likely to get a timely reply if you post a new thread rather than adding on to a three or four year old one....See MoreExperiences with Ethan Allen quality?
Comments (25)What a shame, but I'm not surprised. I'm very skeptical of new furniture. Way back in the 70s I dated an upholsterer. His advice to me was "Never buy new furniture. Find something old and sturdy that you like in a thrift store, get that, and have it reupholstered." He went on and on about how the older furniture was good quality and the newer furniture was poor quality -- and that was long before we were importing everything from China. Naturally, not all old pieces were well built, but your odds of finding an old piece that is well built beat the heck out of your odds of finding a new one that is. If it's survived for many years intact, it will probably keep going. That's one of the reasons I love antiques. Another one is that they tend to appreciate, whereas today's new furniture from most (not all) stores will probably depreciate....See MoreIdentifying marks- Ethan Allen Furniture
Comments (20)Post a photo of the piece - As was stated above - imported pieces can have a metal plate. As for the person who said when Ethan Allen passed and the company went to his son... Well, that's just silly! The company was named Ethan Allen after the revolutionary war hero, because of the Early American connection. Ethan Allen still makes about 70% of it's product in the US - and the made in the US items still have the branded logo. There's a link at the bottom for more on the history of the company.
