Question for Al concerning insecticide he recommended

Al - a few weeks ago I was browsing around the forums and came across a thread where you had recommended Compare N Save Systemic Tree And Shrub Drench
to someone. I thought I saved the information but can't find it on my computer. Since it's an insecticide for trees, I think you gave the o.p. dilution instructions for potted plants in that thread. Can you provide that information? Thank you!!

Deanna, read the entire label carefully for any directions pertaining to the use of this product in containers and inside the home. I couldn't find any.

The manufacturer does include an 800 number on the label, however, and I strongly encourage you to call the company today with your questions. I doubt very much that the use of a twelve month pesticide, intended to be used as a drench on outdoor soil, will be approved for this off-label use.

The manufacturers want to help you; they want you to be successful as well as safe when using their product.

The label is the law.

While you might look at this product and say to yourself that active ingredient imidicloprid might be considered harmless, in fact we put it on dogs under the name Advantage, the devil is in the details. We do not know what the other 98.5 % 'other ingredients' consist of.

And before one blithely decides to assume risk, the little warning that says effect that off label use is a violation of Federal law , you might consider that if something happens and you are hurt, that your insurance company is bound to try to not pay out for activities that violate Federal law.

The mix I use consists of ReptiBark, Manna Pro poultry grit granite chips, perlite, and turface. I use it for my indoor plants and bulbs. If I can't get my hands on turface, I would go for the NAPA floor dry. Most cat litters and floor dry items will list on the bag what the ingredient is... and some will even list what the product can be used for, and in some cases, that includes plant medium. From what I gather, we're looking for calcined clay or diatomaceous earth. The bonsai site is a gold mine of information, just by showing us other items we could look into. Like anything else, we have to research a bit and take it all with a grain of salt and a little logical thought. There are bound to be controversial writings at each website. The bonsai website I linked is actually in the UK, so the items he lists will be more available in Europe. But there are a few lines written about what you can use in America. I think he points more toward NAPA floor dry in the US. Also, he shows how to test items... like by freezing overnight and such... to see how they hold up. I like the website because it gives me ideas. It makes me think. If I couldn't locate turface or NAPA oil dry, what would I look for? I'd probably begin in the cat litter aisle at PetSmart or other large store, or I'd look for pumice. The possibilities out there is really what the bonsai website is about. Personally, I would stick with turface if at all possible, and go for the NAPA floor dry if turface is unavailable.

Myk: If you can't get Imidan, look around for Permethrin, sold in a 2.5% active ingredient formula. I have had Malathion around for years, and never found it effective on anything but aphids. But Permethrin works against my principal insect enemies, which are plum curculio, oriental fruit moth, and codling moth. I would about as soon use dish soap as the combo Bonide spray (malathion, sevin, captan I believe), which is so weak in it components as to be useless, and uses the wrong components anyway. When used with a small amount of sticker/spreader, Permethrin will stay on and be effective for more than a week. Malathion is malathion, BTW, the only difference being the labeling of different brands. In cases like this, common sense can be applied, though I wouldn't personally use malathion since it doesn't work well for me. I know Permethrin is available from Tractor Supply, which is a NC based firm, sold as "Multi-Insect Killer", but if you don't have those a large nursery might be a better bet than a bigbox store. My Lowes and Home Depots no longer carry even dormant oil, but a lot of pseudo-organic stuff that is of no interest to me, and a lot of pre-mixed products that enable them to raise the price significantly. Ed sounded hopeful. I sent him a pic of the eye and the roots. He said it looked real promising from what he saw. Good color, firm. And roots look good and he couldn't see any signs of crown rot, not bacterial rot as no bad odor. But he said it's hard to kill a hosta. And they can bounce back from anything, anything but rot. But if you get it off the good parts in time, it has a chance. I am hopeful. I am going to reorder her though. Any suggestions on a good place to order from that is not in Minnesota and still frozen? Orange Marmalade was just all mush. No visible eye any longer. As was Fire and Ice. But I hear F&I is not an easy one anyway, either, like Dream Queen. I calculated my losses, w/o including Luna Moth yet, I am at 35%!!! Ed said I am not to blame it was just we were hit with ice and snow bam, bam, bam. And it was heavy and sometimes it just can't take all that. Here's a pic of my current arrangement on and around patio. I put the patio babies up on bricks and stands so the sun hits them for longer. And I moved the ones in deep shade, because they need it the most, over to all day direct sun for now because they have good eyes but they are the least amount of growth showing, so I am forcing them out of dormancy, if you will, like the other lady.

I agree with the guys in the electrical forum. When I hear statements like this it frightens me to know that they're fixing to do something like energize a portable tub on the advice of a Home Depot aisle worker. QUOTE" At the service panel end I'm presuming I'll connect the red and the black to the breaker and the other two wires to the ground bar. At the other end of the cable, where it hooks up to the GFCI, is there anything special to know or will that wiring be obvious? He told me that the wiring the guy at Home Depot recommended has 4 conductors encased in a flat cable; 3 of the conductors look to be about #8 stranded, and the 4th conductor is much smaller diameter. He also has a weatherproof hookup box that contains a GFCI, which I haven't looked at yet. "QUOTE Whatever you do DON"T TAKE A JOB LIKE THIS LIGHTLY. Your safety and that of the bathers depends on an installation that meets code. Here's what I use for my installs. 60amp 240volt GFCI breaker installed at the existing power center or a sub panel (NO EXCEPTIONS) 2 #4awg 1 #6awg 1 #8awg, I use THHN/THWN inside of 1 1/4" sch40 a&u conduit. Mine may have higher amperage loads because the pumps are 5hp each so I have a larger breaker and wire size than you might need. IMO, if your unable to determine your amperage load and size the appropriate breaker/wire size for the tub and are unclear on the manner of wiring in a GFCI breaker "PAY A PRO" just my .02 See ya, Kelly

Deanna, I take it back about the calling the company. I emailed them and the owner couldn't provide information.....he is simply a distributor.

I would expect distributor to be able to supply name of the manufacturer. Some of the info that should be on the label is Manufacture's contact information; Phone number and EPA registration number. If you have enough info, maybe you can search the site linked below, for your product - or call them.

CHECK HERE - lots of info available if you explore the site.

I believe she's simply asking for the conversion since she's not watering a tree, she doesn't need gallons of the stuff, she needs may be one gallon, if that.
