I would go, perhaps, with the same basic stain color or undertone for the perimeter counters as the island, but in a different value... Darker or lighter, so the island has some additional character, separating it from the counter color. What style is your island? We have some stainless on our perimeter counters, but stainless on the island counter, central to the room and bigger, can be cold ...or wonderful, depending on the style and color of the island. You might already be aware that it'll dent and scratch, so you have to appreciate patina. I think you might be trying to match things that have no relationship to keep from having too much going on. But, if I can be honest, I think joining things like island and perimeter counter, and island counter and the range backing doesn't really make sense and can draw the eye in a way you might not like, and actually make the room seem busier. Let things stand alone and create a focal point, or decide on elements you want to showcase, allowing them to be a little different to stand out. If you have a line drawing of the kitchen, or a 3D view that you can add color to and try different options, it could really help you create the vision you want. It sounds like you might be going for a period look in which some unfittedness could be appropriate, so things don't have to match. Do you have some samples of the colors and materials, and maybe a view of the kitchen you can show here?

Hardwood is being installed tomorrow, yay!!! Hi Lynn, The edge is I believe a regular ogee edge on the island, the fabricators just used numbers for their edge selections, it was #250. The perimeter edge is an eased edge. I read some where maybe on GW that sometimes if you do a fancier edge on the island, most people won't notice it's not done on all the counters in the kitchen. I also like the simpleness of it on the perimeters. Romy, Yes, we have backsplash! I thought long and hard and changed my mind so so many times. Backsplashes are the hardest thing to choose, aren't they? Lol In the end, we just went with simple. My husband the last time at the tile place just pointed to the tile and said he liked it, I was like "Really!?!?!" It was the first tile I considered months and months ago. I looked back at all my inspiration pics on Houzz and then noticed 90% had that same tile in them. White 3x6 beveled subway. I'm going to go in the next couple of days again to see the hardwood and by then the backsplash will be grouted, I'll take more pics. :)

Lavender, I know you've seen my kitchen (probably too many times) but I did want to chime in about having a wood counter with a sink. Our main and only sink in the kitchen is antique pine. DH just went over it with fine steel wool and Good Stuff For Wood for only the 3rd time since we built 6.5 years ago. (There is a second, small sink in the black hutch - coffee station - but we literally never use it.) No, we don't leave wet towels or sponges overnight. Or dirty dishes and glasses. I'm a clean as I go girl and DH is pretty good to get his things in the sink if not to the dish drawers. I do not regret in any way, shape or form getting wood counters. The coffee station has pine (new). Honed Golden Leaf granite is used on either side of the range and pine hutch. It's also used in the laundry room, which is off the hallway where the black hutch is located. In all, we have three counter materials, three painted finishes and one stain. (Not including the laundry room cabinets, but they are similar in color to the fridge section.) You don't have to stick with solid counters if you use more than one counter. It can be done, but has to be carefully planned. Have you ever seen wood-look concrete counters ? I am in love with them! If only I lived near New Jersey!

I had to laugh at the one slab being "too modern." Consider the age of that particular piece of rock! Besides that, I think you need to look around the slab yards a bit more. Considering how much money this will cost, how long you'll have to look at it, and what a major player it will be in your kitchen, I don't think you've found the slab that "sings to you." Seeing lots of slabs, in person, helps you get a feel for what's there. After a while, you begin to know what you like in general with your floor and cabs, and THEN, it happens - the right slab says, "Here I am." I don't think you're quite there yet, so keep looking. With any luck, THE ONE will be somewhat less expensive - or maybe not.
