Aside from the terrible installation. Is that a mud base or a foam one? I only ask because of the square drain. Some foam bases have tile size limitations and do not allow small mosaics.

How can cheap tile be more difficult to line up than expensive tile?

I did not think the tile was cheap. It was 11 dollars a square foot and the GC is not cheap either. He did a great job on our main tile floor. Bottom line it is as bad as I think it is. The walls have now been tiled with a different tile and look great.

If he knew ahead of time pennies were a bad choice, he should have spoken up.

If he discovered partway through installing the pennies that he could not get the seams to line up and the installation was going to look like it does, he should have stopped and asked for guidance. If guidance was not immediately available, he should have torn out what was there (easy since the thinset had not cured), cleaned up the removed tile, clean up the membrane, and then ask for guidance.

Moving forward? First, with the floor looking like that, and with the idea that the floor is going to be remedied, I never would have allowed the walls to be tiled in order to keep the RedGard membrane accessible.

The tiles should be able to be removed from the floor. Being a mud base, the mud can be repaired as needed and recoated with new Redgard. And THAT's why I would not have tiled the walls, so new RedGard on the floor could easily be lapped up on to wall membrane.

Can't really recommend what specific tile to replace the pennies, because the pennies are not the problem. The tiler is.

If the floor tiles are removed would the membrane be compromised? I know a membrane was used as so was redgard, but I don’t remember the order of things. We did not stop things because we need the certificate of occupancy soon and I don’t need further ill will with the GC as the finishing details are being completed. I was considering removing the tile myself after we move into the house and having another person come in to do the tile. If we can not reach an agreement with the GC

The GC had me convinced that the slope and the penny tiled were the issue. There seems to be a lot problems with penny tile that I did not know about until afterwards. I do fault him for finish the tile floor looking as it does and then proceeding with a second tile floor that looks just as bad....

I chose penny tile for my powder room and regretted it as soon as I saw it installed. Penny tile has to be installed perfectly otherwise the naked eye can easily spot the uneven gaps. I threw a rug down and called it a day. Sorry you're going through this. I'll never choose penny tile again...

Ah, I thought RedGard was used under the floor as well.

If there is just a pvc membrane buried under the deck mud, then the tiles can be removed. If there are any dings or divots in the mud base, they can easily be repaired and new tile can be set.

If there is RedGard on top of the sloped mud, the tiles can still be removed and the surface cleaned. Any divots or dings in the mud can be patched. I'd then recoat the entire surface with more RedGard. Then retile.

If the tiles get removed and the RedGard looks perfect? I'm STILL cleaning it up well and I'm STILL going over it with more RedGard. The membrane could have been compromised on a pinhole level when the tile was removed.
