You could definitely do it if you changed out the coffee table to something either metal and glass or in similar grey wash. The brown wash they offer looks quite nice though too.

I would definitely like to steer you toward a long console instead of the huge piece you're considering. They really are going out of style and why have something so large when all you need is a place to put the TV? A great look would be a metal/glass coffee table as Cara has suggested and a much larger and more colorful Oriental rug and some sort of fabric window covering (Roman shade?) on the windows by the fireplace. The window covering could be cream to coordinate with your furniture. Your room will look much larger with a large rug and a console rather than a giant media center that will visually eat up space, as will a glass coffee table.

Agree 100% with above - you really do NOT want such a massive thing. Pretty dated.

Agree with most above... the lower portion would be great in the space, yet a coffee table that works with it would be in order. I'd not do the giant media center. Leave the fireplace to be the centerpiece!

I suggest a console that is larger than the one that is there now. That would provide enough storage space for whatever video equipment plus extra space.

In addition, a piece of furniture can be placed under the window to provide extra storage if that is needed.

A larger carpet is needed for the seating area.

The mantel is placed too high, and brackets below it are too chunky and should be removed.

If that area is a place commonly used for the family to watch TV or movies, instead of a coffee table, what might be preferable to a coffee table is a large ottoman on which a tray can be placed for serving drinks and snacks and it can also be used for extra seating.

Once the rug is purchased, coordinating throw pillows can be purchased as well.

the decision would depend on my/family's needs. As much as I love low TV consoles-I need lots of storage for other things like books, music and movie collections, photo albums, kids' art, documents etc.

If one has separate spaces and places it can be organized-great. Or if one doesn't have that many books and albums etc because he prefers digital format or for whatever reason-also great.

If one does have many such items to store, and no additional place-I'll always pick one bigger piece that can be my workhorse..and media usually loves other media.

I'll agonize over style all right, I'll consider what it should be for months, and I might spend a lot of money on that, because such pieces are paramount to me, they ensure my normal functioning lol.

Doesn't mean I'll pick something heavy looking, can be light looking combo with shelves and all. In my experience the better it is the more money it costs..:) Or the more hassle to find it at all. But can be versatile enough to take from house to house, if modular. And should allow for some growing, so to say.

Don't look at absolute price-brands nowadays charge a lot for just about anything new. (Say I think this Pottery Barn piece is overpriced. Most of these companies are. But then something better will cost even more, or will be custom, thus also will cost more-or one might get lucky and find something great second hand.

Mind you I'm not saying it's bad. But weigh whether it'll deliver to you what you want it to deliver. It costs a lot-it'd rather do a fabulous job for you)

so here, in this particular case, my first question would be:

-what I need to store? where? how I want it all to function?

after I know my answer I think through the style and all the other details

for several years already we're very fortunate to have separate library with a space for TV and all

but beforehand it was many years of just one space for all of these. And as such had to be very well thought out.

Since you have the lovely tall fireplace which IMO is a statement. What about a media center with two bookcases on each side and vs. having a large media center as you show with the piece closing it across the top.

Just some inspiration photos if you are seeking storage as well as a tv console. The fireplace appears to have grays within it. However, we can't see the rest of your room and if it's similar in wood to the coffee table then it will not work. If your coffee table is the only thing that is more traditional in the space then perhaps changing it at some time to get the piece for the wall you like.
