Comments (14)I appreciate the responses! Don't get me wrong. I love our kitchen. I like the size, the functionality, the amount of storage and that it opens to the family room and has a walk in pantry. Our house is a little over 20 years old and what you cannot see in the pics is that the cabinets are pretty worn and need a help. The insides are worse and don't have the bells and whistles of what you can get today. But I can live without pullouts and self closing drawers and a little "Cushy Cupboard product or liner would help the shelving or at least cover them up. lol. I am getting an estimate from what looks to be like an excellent paint company that does lots of interior/exterior work on painting or possibly restaining to freshen/clean them up. I definitely want to add crown molding to the tops. Thanks for the suggestions to the sides and bottoms too and for posting that link! Very helpful I really want double ovens. Right now the microwave is not original to the oven below and is sitting on a piece of plywood with a makeshift metal surround to make it appear, unsuccesfully, to be built in. It is strange IMO to have this huge island and have no seating for it. Do you agree? Or would you just leave it alone and change the top? So our needs are: new counter surfaces new back splash new windows refinish floors freshen cabinetry new appliances to fit in existing openings (oven/microwave combo) Wants are: Modify opening to accomodate double oven Modify Island to accomodate seating I will let you know what the painter says. This involves the big builtin bookcase in the family room pictured as well and also a smaller builtin on the opposit wall not pictured. If I really like what the painter says we'll most likely paint/restain and then have to find a GC to find out about making modifications to existing cabinetry. I may even end up cancelling the refacing appointment cause I think you are all right. THere's really nothing wrong with what we have and the cost would probably give me heart failure. Thanks again. Comments (9)Hi Amber, we live in the Pac NW and our home is a northwest contemporary craftsman with some asian influence. Our kitchen is going to be strongly leaning towards the Greene and Greene aesthetic. Which is why QS is still in the running. :-) I know what you mean about the modern look of most of the walnut cabinet faces! Beautiful, but that is not what we are going for, at all. Oh, and just in case you find it interesting, the reclaimed walnut comes from this amazing place down in portland where they source urban trees that need to come down, as well as salvage oregon walnut from old buildings. Like I said before, I think your $1000 is much better soent somewhere else! Unless someone is down on their knees, no one is going to see your panel that much! And LOVE that island style!...See MoreKitchen remodel ...de-oak cabinets ...stools? (repost from remodel)
Comments (15)These are some great ideas ... to be clear, I can paint the cabinets no problem (have experience and appropriate equipment), but I have resisted over the past couple of years because we had higher priority things to get done in the house. We're getting past those now, so have time to go back and tweek. I like idea of crown on the uppers. Removing the cab over the sink is problematic ...it has an LED under it that is really important to the sink function ... will have to look and see if I can pull it, route the wiring into the ceiling and then back down into another dangly fixture that could match whatever ends up being over the island? Funny thing ... taking photos and then studying them actually helps ME! The fan is ugly ... but it is a wonderful thing ...maybe paint it white to match ceiling? (we did this to two fans in this house and two in another ...makes them sort of disappear). We replaced two in another house with dark brown ones to hook up with the dark woodwork ... it looks good, too. We'll look at replacing the glass on the two dangly lights ...it does need some contrast from the white ... since they don't do much, anyway, perhaps industrial stainless, dark gray, red or black?...See Moreanother move another kitchen remodel...
Comments (13)Congratulations on your new house! If your cabinets are in good shape and sturdy I think they would be lovely painted. You would probably want to replace the doors for a more modern or transitional look if you like, but they would be sweet as is if you were looking for more of a cottage feel. With paint, new hardware, new counters and your husband adding extra cabinets you'll feel like you have a brand new kitchen! I had the golden oak cabinets in my former kitchen professionally painted after wanting to for years but always chickening out. If you Google my username plus "gardenweb kitchen" you can find the before and after pics. Some told me I shouldn't bother and it might be like putting lipstick on a pig, but the cabinets were solid wood and very good quality - only 15 years old. So I decided to save money and do a mini remodel instead of gutting the entire kitchen. What a difference it made! It actually made my granite counters look better too and I was thinking of replacing them before. I also replaced the black appliances with stainless and that was another improvement in brightening up the dark kitchen. With everything, it ended up a 15k remodel instead of a 50k + remodel. Everyone loved it and we sold the house at asking price in less than 3 weeks. I also loved the result and wish that I had done it sooner so I would have been able to enjoy them longer before we moved....See MoreBeth H. :
