9' ceilings, cabinets to ceiling - cabinet height?
Comments (17)Thanks for all the responses and pictures! I can't really stagger the heights since I do have piping/PVC in some areas of the existing soffits. My original plan was to stagger until I opened up the soffits! I also do plan to use 15" deep cabinets to add some interest to the depth (center cabinets will be deeper and glass, corner cabinet will be deeper and piece above sink will be recessed slightly). The cooktop is also being bumped out (w/ angled posts) and I will have an apron front stainless sink. I'm hoping that all will add some interest to the cabinets. BTW, the dimension of the kitchen space is 14'x14' but it's wide open to the eat-in area which is around 12'x14' which is then open to a family room I do have a follow-up question though. If I have undercabinet lighting with moulding to cover it, should the 18" from the counter to cabinet be to the bottom of the moulding? That pushes up the cabinets slightly (but doesn't help me with reaching since I'm pretty short!). Thanks!...See MoreDishwasher/cabinet height mismatch blues
Comments (8)A 4-1/2" toe space is not uncommon (off the top of my head Merrilat, Showplace, Brookhaven). Many frameless brands have it- 30" wall cabinet, 30" base on 4 1/2" toe. I've done panels for those, BUT I strongly encourage European dishwashers if you want a panel. Else take your chances in which case I'm with rolle, get the DW first. (really wish the American mfg's would get this right) I looked at the Monogram specs and don't see an answer for you unfortunately. It might be possible to work it out but on site. Does it vent out the top? or are they just worried? Can that be cheated? likely voids the warranty but whatever you can get out of the top would help. I think if I had to do this- I'd make the front edges of the door align with the rest of the cabinets, add a very thin strip at the bottom to cover the dishwasher face, and cut a rabbet into the top behind the face to increase the clearance to what they are asking for. Likely the Thomasville won't do the rabbet so it has to be done on site. IF they don't offer self stick veneer or similar the thin strip can be cut from a piece of solid material by someone who knows what they are doing- needs to be a decent thickness piece to do that, and it will curl coming off the saw. We have to go over the DW (not the panel) specs with a careful eye to make sure we can get the correct look, to see if what they recommend works or if we can change safely....See MoreCeiling & Room Height vs cabinet height
Comments (8)Thank you both for chiming in! It seems OK in my brain, but the house isn't built yet, so it's hard (even with design software) to truly appreciate the space. We are trying to fit full size fridge, full size freezer, slide in range, dishwasher, microwave and trash pullout into the space, plus an accessible sink, so there isnt much space left for items in the lower cabs, so putting in as many uppers as possible seems the better option to me. We could possibly put in a tray ceiling, or some sort of soffit around the top, but that seems wasteful. I do love crown, Mags438 - do you have any pics of your kitchen? I'd love to see it. Thanks!...See MoreDid I make a huge mistake with my kitchen cabinet height?
Comments (51)"With those pullouts, one is for larger utensils (whisks, spatulas, etc). Do you hear of people regretting those too?" I think those kind of pullouts are better than they would be for spices, because you do not have the issues of bottles jostling and falling over, or the need to squat and peer to see the labels. Having said that, I still prefer shallow drawers for cooking utensils similar to what @cpartist posted above. I have three drawers for different purposes. One is the top drawer directly next to the range, and that drawer stack is just 15" wide. That top drawer has the cooking utensils I use constantly such as spatulas, wooden spoon and wooden spatula, can opener, butcher shears, and tongs. The drawer just underneath it has my knife insert. Oh, I do love that knife drawer insert. I like it so much better than a bulky knife block on the counter. Then separately I have a wide shallow drawer for my utensil and gadget addiction, but they are things I do not use so often - whisks, baster, meat thermometer, spider, lemon juicer, onion goggles (yes, that is what I said), offset spatulas for cake frosting, dough scraper, potato masher, and more. I opted not to get the dividers that cpartist has in her drawers. My cooking utensils/gadgets are tossed in willy-nilly. If you do not have an addiction to those utensils/gadgets like I do, you won't even need that third drawer haha. Here is a pic of a knife drawer insert similar to mine. They come in many different sizes, widths, number of slots....See MoreAnglophilia
