Comments (11)I've had Brinks twic & DCS once in Virginia, and ADT in Illinois. I need to hook up a system here we had hard wired when we built last year. I will probably go with Brinks, depending on what kind of a deal I get with them. I believe once you go with Brinks, they'll hook you up free in your next home. ADT told us that too, but mysteriously can't find evidence of our contract that we carried when we lived in Illinois. I've had my phone lines cut before years ago and no one called me with Brinks. Technology has changed so I'm sure it would be different today. I've not seen Brinks advertising in our neck of the woods, so I'm still going to have to do research soon. I was pleased with all companies. I will say this, I really liked the gizmo that DCS has that causes the doors and windows to chime to let you know someone entered or exited. Certainly took away a lot of the jumping around from being spooked and startled. As for security camera. I'm going to install a monitor in my office and BR so I can see who comes up my drive and at the front door. Our architect worked out of her basement and installed one from Radio Shack. It worked great! She had installed small cameras in two upstairs windows and one near the front door. She got sick and tired of running up and down stairs for the UPS guy. I, too, am sick of being half way across the house or working in my office and don't know who's up front. Our property is about 1.5 acres and our house is on the large side, too....See MoreBest place to put the keypad for security system
Comments (10)We installed systems in half of the last six places we've lived. All six had multiple keypads. Find out if your company offers more than one included with the installation or how much more to add an additional one if you have to pay. If you have to pay, then you may have other options such as a portable key pad (very handy with full keystrokes, particularly emergency use poolside or placed on your bedside nightstand) or key fobs with just an on and off button (which have the disadvantage that anyone can use them as no code is required) or simply another wall-mounted pad which often are placed in the master bedroom but could be mounted anywhere convenient. To answer you question, one closest to the most frequently used door is helpful as in reduces the length of time needed to (de)activate the system, but it really depends on how you'll use the system and how many floors/ how large your house is. We currently have 3 levels, 4 keypads (3 on the main level front door, garage and master bdrm and 1 in the basement) and 2 fobs. Since we rarely go downstairs I find it helpful to usually keep the alarm always activated and by-pass the front and garage doors while home and may by-pass other windows or doors on occasion when the weather is wonderful. You may also check into adding wireless transmitters on garage windows and pedestrian doors or anyplace that your home may not be pre-wired but poses a concern....See MoreHome security system with cameras?
Comments (5)Wired security system and IP (ethernet wired) cameras.. Personally I would get separate systems.. Have a dedicated alarm system that is hardwired throughout and then a separate DVR/NVR camera setup.. We are still looking at the wired security systems to see what fits our needs the best, but probably going with a hardwired DSC alarm that will have all windows and doors hardwired with sensors as well as several motion sensors, water leak sensors, smoke/fire, etc.. and connected in with a monitoring company.. For cameras I have already purchased all of them.. We are doing a full HIK Vision setup which includes 4 bullet camers and 10 dome cameras that are all 3mp and then 2 PTZ dome cameras that can be remotely moved to view anything.. They also set up in a "patrol" mode that will automatically scan your property and if it picks up movement in your set zone it will automatically zoom in and follow the movement as well as send notification to your phone if you set it up.....See MoreRelated Professionals
