The recommended location is easily accessible and on the way to an exit. I plan on keeping mine in the double angled cabinet near the hall if it fits, will likely have to put a sign or other indication it is there. Othwise, haven't figured that out yet. I love oldbat's niche. I could have done that, but I'm short and clumsy. There's a 99% chance I'd manage to knock it over and out of reach when I try to grab it quick. If the counter there was standard instead of 30 inches I'd have a chance, though then I wouldn't have the extra inches that make the niche :-/

Remember, fire is likely to start near the range. If your extinguisher is in the cabinet next to or under the fire, you won't want to open a door/drawer to get it. Better a bit of distance away from the fire so you can approach the fire at a safe distance. My big red one says stand back 8 feet. My little white one says stand back 6 feet. The little cheapie doesn't give a distance.

Thank you all! I can't believe I didn't get around to bringing back the fire extinguisher. I saw it in the hall closet last night and remembered. (It's pretty close to the kitchen but not the first place you'd look in a panic, that's for sure.) I looked at a website and also called my neighborhood fire station. The local firefighter said that under a sink is acceptable for residences; for foster homes etc it has to be mounted on a wall. He and the online site both said that the ideal location is in full view somewhere on the path out of the kitchen, so you don't have to go toward the flames to get to it. He acknowledged that people don't always want a fire extinguisher hanging on their kitchen wall and wasn't concerned about someone having it in a cabinet. The website was a little more alarmist than he was and said it should be out in plain sight so the babysitter could find it fast. (!) During all this I also ran across an America's Test Kitchen video review of fire extinguishers. Their online written review has a lot more information (including a description of the terrible performance of some of them) but I'm not a subscriber so I couldn't access the whole thing. The video review is helpful, though, so I'll link it. If you all see a fire extinguisher on the wall when/if I finally get around to posting finished kitchen pics, you will know that I took the babysitter thing to heart... I would hate to have an accident that could have been prevented, but was not, because of my "kitchen vanity". editionk, take your receipt for your kitchen fire extinguisher to your insurance agent and they'll apply a recurring discount the next time your policy renews. They may allow you to email them a scan of it. I think it increases with carbon monoxide detectors etc. In addition, every couple of years I take an online defensive driving course for about $20.00 to keep my defensive driving discount. The course more than pays for itself with the recurring discounts, but you have to take it every two or three years. rmkitchen, yes, I live in our fab capitol. I love Boulder! I did my undergrad there. Pasta Jays is my favorite restaurant. Their stuffed shells are the best. We live in a beautiful state. Where did you relocate from?
