Trees leafing out early?
Comments (3)I have a trident and hornbeam leafing in my basement under flourescents since March 1st. My wife and family keep door open to my 40 degree garage and i'm leaving in zone 5 . It has been very cold here.Thought I would start them early. My bonsai teacher says it is ok for one time, but next year leave in 40 degree setting untill season is right.Different trees require different amounts of dormant hours-up to 10000....See MoreWacky winter--midwest roses leafing out already, 4-6wks early!
Comments (25)Temps are predicted to drop significantly into the teens over the next 3 to 5 days and snow for tomorrow night and Saturday. Only an inch though. Not enough to cover and do much good. But then next week sometime it's supposed to go back up into the 40s again! What a crazy winter! Snow fall amounts are less than half what it was last year at this time and days above freezing are more than twice as many. I watered my roses today! We haven't had any significant precipitation in several weeks and it has been very sunny the last few days so I thought maybe they'd like a drink. I also think they'll fare better in the cold snap if they're well hydrated. I had to lug gallon jugs of water out, ugh! If this weather does keep on like this I'm going to ask his nibbs to hook the hose back up!...See Moreearly leaf out?

Comments (50)Patty- thanks for telling of your experience with these various roses. My Fireopal and Jolie are pretty winter hardy but South Africa isn't. Strange how that works. Fiji is struggling too but I potted it up and it's growing much better now. We have had such a cold spring and crappy cool summer here I think it wreaked havoc with my roses. We've only had a couple of days in the low 90's. I loved it but my roses haven't so very little growth or flowers, even on the roses that don't seem to be affected by rose midge. My best Kordes performer by far is Honeymoon Arbor rose. I have a Florentina band that's growing really well. No flowers but I really didn't expect any. Another band that is growing really well is Tequila Supreme. I've had several flowers on her. Hopefully she's winter hardy. I never had heard of Heart Song. What a stunning rose.
