Pharaoh x 3 for confused; please explain. I have a double bowl undermount stainless sink surrounded by a seamless single slab of silver sea granite. 11 years later it's still going strong. Not a crack or chip anywhere in the kitchen and I don't baby it. Hope I didn't jinx myself! Love the color and wish I could keep it for my remodel, but layout changes prohibit that. Dishdiva; how stressful! I'm glad they'll be replacing it. I'd insist on it. My sister experienced something similar. Big beautiful slab of granite for the island was installed with a crack. She saw it and made them replace it. Installed again and they used the same slab repaired with filling! Supposedly not noticed by the contractor when installed. Like sis wouldn't notice? Not a chance. She was livid, rightly so, and made them replace it with the new piece she picked out before the 2nd install. She has cream paint finish with a walnut island, Plain and Fancy I think and they were able to remove it twice without damaging the cabs and believe me if they did, she's have them replace those at their expense also. Hope that's reassuring. Love the color of your granite (green fan here) and what you've shown so far and I look forward to seing your finished kitchen. Please keep us posted. I've got my fingers crossed that 3 times the charm!

"I was just talking about this with my sister after noticing the same thing in her 250 year old house. She said that the cracks appear every winter in the plaster and disappear again in the spring (or at least become not noticable)." These are often refered to as 'working cracks' that open and close as the wood in the building swells and chrinks between cooling and heating seasons. There are some claims by various companies of flexible material that can move with the substrate and keep the crack invisible year round, but every time I have tried them they have failed. They bulge during the swelling phase when the crack closes, or pull away from the material when it shrinks, opening the crack again. I have even had cracks that were open near the floor of houses close at the floor and open near the ceiling when layers of roofing were removed. Nothing like taking a few thousand pounds of shingles off the roof to change the loading on the structure. A common problem with molding is using inexpensive 'painters caulk' to fill gaps between the trim and the wall. Better quality caulk has at least a chance of staying attached. I prefer the siliconized acrylics that are not as expensive as full silicone caulks (that do not accept paint) but often double the really cheap stuff. Around $4-5 a tube is what I typically pay.

That is such a shame...it is a beautiful piece of stone. The stone yard is liable for that damage isn't it? It would be great if your fabricator can still use this, but if not you should be refunded. I'm interested to hear how this turns out...keep us posted.

Our L piece was almost as large - 96" for one leg and 44" for the other leg with the last 16" of the 44" leg having part of the sink cut out. Our fabricator never mentioned any concern in making the piece that size (but perhaps 13 more inches would have been an issue). The path to get it in was up the side yard, turn the corner into the back yard (a right angle turn but with fairly good clearances for maneuvering the piece) and turning in through the sliding door. They did have to get it past (or over) the island and settled in between the fridge at one end of the long leg and the wall. The outside path was paved with one step - but my DH made a sturdy wood ramp so things for the kitchen could be rolled up the step. Ours was 2 cm so it would have weighed less than your L pieces, but our island is a bit over 8' by 5' so that piece would have weight more than either of your L pieces. IIRC they had 4 guys to place the island top. My understanding is that one concern with an L like ours is that the ends going around the sink cut out aren't as strong and can get broken off while moving the piece. Some fabricators don't like to take that risk. Our stone was quartzite and pretty strong and solid. Some stones are more fragile and would have more of a risk of breaking in transport.
