Anyone Ordering Any Different, Little Known Roses This Year?
Comments (34)From my spring orders, the most unusual: Errinerung an Brod (rambler) Inermis Morletii (rambler) Umbra (gallica hybridized by Paul Barden) Incantation (small shrub rose, also by Barden) Geschwind's Orden (shrub) Norland Rose (climber) Break o'Day (Brownell HT) Andrewsii (spinossisima) Alika (gallica) Prairie Flower (Buck) Sweet Fragrance (Grandiflora by Ping Lim) Omphale (gallica) Daphne' (gallica) Heinrich Karsch (polyantha) And for every one of these (plus the other seven I haven't listed because I see them talked about all the time) I must find a rose already in the garden to remove, pot up and give away. No expansion, that's my self-imposed new rule and that will make planting twice the work, I think! Oh well, a good number of these will be small bands that may not go in the ground yet this year. We'll see how they do in pots for a while. :-) Anne...See MoreExceptional roses in the heat
Comments (39)Thank you, Organic_tosca and Ingrid for this discussion on fragrance, I learn something new. Hi Diane: My Austins bloom much better this year by withholding nitrogen, and give sulfur to most of them (except for the ones that like it alkaline). Radio Times is a compact short bush ... always blooming. Last year it was a twice bloomer with giant octopus canes. The rose park nearby have Austins grafted on Dr. Huey. There's a big decline over the years, even with perfect soil, plenty of rain and expertise. They bloom less and less progressively. Last year there was only one bloom on Abraham Darby in rainy fall, then I don't see Ab. Darby anymore this year. I kept wondering why my "Bolero" as own-root blooms so much next to 2-trees, now I understand ... after digging up Dr. Huey, Dr. Huey plus own-root, and own-root. Own-roots can spread out, or "sucker" better, an advantage for most efficient-water uptake, water can be gathered from many points. It's easier for water to flow into horizontal spreading roots, rather than go up a vertical stick (Dr. Huey), then fight against gravity to go upward through a constricting bud-union. This bud-union can deteriorate in my -20 below zero winter, or sitting in warehouses drying-out for months....See MoreBad News: Heirloom's Austin Roses
Comments (14)Its no different then any other grower discontinuing a line of roses that they consider to be inferior or not economically sustaining to keep growing. Even in my relatively short time growing roses-15 years- there have been plenty of roses that I thought were nice that the breeders decided to drop and are now only available through niche growers. Austin is no different. If people were buying the old roses he would keep marketing them, but if they are only a small part, it makes no sense for him to keep them in the market when he has roses that are better. Believe me I am familiar with hard to find roses. It took me 2 years to find a Climbing Lady Hillingdon, and to those who say Lady Hillingdon and CL Lady Hillingdon are the same plant, while I find the bush variety to be a lovely plant, it doesn't compare at all to the climber, and it took me another year to find a Cardinal De Richelui. Its the same with any industry, you eventually drop the old line in favor of the new unless the old line is just dynamic and even then it eventually gets updated. Also, not sure on all of them, but DA America says you can order Constance Spry for next year, but they are out of it for this year? Anyway, its the man's business not mine, he can run it how he pleases. As long as he keeps breeding roses I like, gives me good quality(which David Austin America has), and doesn't start selling them for ridiculous prices I will probably keep buying...If not I will buy someone else's rose and be just as happy....See MoreHortico rare roses?
Comments (2)Last yr, I got some of their sort of rare roses. I ordered CHESS, FREE SPIRIT, J&Ps MONET (GRAND IMPRESSION), ROTARY SUNRISE, among other roses. Unfortunately tho, the MONET and ROTARY SUNRISE ended up not being the correct roses. MONET ended up being the purple version of MONET, not the apricot blend J&P one. And the apricot/yellow Fryer's rose RS, ended up being a red rose, which I think might be ROTARY ROSE or ROTER STERN. So, technically they are close, name-wise, but wrong as to the actual version. They are supposed to be replacing them for me this yr, hopefully with the correct roses. That remains to be seen. That being said.... this yr, I ordered a few roses I haven't seen in some time. CARDINAL SONG is a beautiful older Meilland red GR with a black rim. I had it yrs ago and it died. Haven't seen it available anywhere for yrs! I also ordered POLAR STAR, a nice white Tantau HT that I actually haven't ever seen in person. Not been available anywhere that I remember for many yrs. I'm replacing my GINGER a beautiful red-orange FL. Nobody else has it. If you like white roses, a good one is JOSE CARRERAS. They're the only ones carrying him. And a beautiful pink and yellow blend that I believe nobody else carries is DIE WELT. I'm replacing that one. Heck, there's a lot they have that no one else has. They have a lot of Fryer roses that nobody in the US has. I love the Fryers! Here's some pics: CHESS - I love the purpley color and lovely clusters of blooms. FREE SPIRIT - nice blooms and decent repeat for the first yr. JOSE CARRERAS - a big beauty... unfortunately the thrips like it pretty well... DIE WELT (THE WORLD) GINGER TICKLED PINK is a nice pink Fryer FL ROTARY SUNRISE - the "real" one... which I sure hope they actually have to replace whatever that red one was that they sent instead... SPECIAL OCCASION is a wonderful apricot HT that blooms constantly... not that easy to find anymore in the US. VERSAILLES is a lovely and extremely tall light pink HT from Delbard. Oh and one of the rarer DAs that I got last yr , and that I think I'm gonna like quite a bit is... ADMIRED MIRANDA. I don't see her currently listed tho. I think she was available in the fall maybe. Maybe they'll bring her back next yr, as well as some of the others that sold out earlier.. like JAYNE AUSTIN which I wish I had ordered before it sold out. Mine just died a few months ago when I transplanted it. ADMIRED MIRANDA...See Morerosecanadian
